They have raised in South Carolina during the
year 187D for their worn-out preachers and the
widows and orphans of deceased preachers, $4,8t?8

They have raised in the same territory during
tins year for missions (exclusive of the amount
raised by the Women's Missionary Societies)

These figures, statistical and financial, at once
show the wonderful growth of this denomination
in the past, and their immense possibilities
^ ^^for good in the future.

are pleased to learn that the public-graded
schools of this Townsliip, after a short vacation,
have been resumed. Mr. Mnyficld has cxhihited
great energy in this work, and the community
will give due credit to him, and those who
have aided him in inaugurating the graded
schools in this city. The experiment he undertook,
has proved a success. These graded public
schools arc the great desideratum of the times.
.They arc the most cllicicnt handmaid of popular
education, which is now the watchword in till
civilized communities, and especially in free governments.
Tito only difficulty with us, in South
I Carolina, is, in devising a system of popular clI
ueation adapted to the Wants of the people, and
I within the limits of the means of the people to
1 support the system. In this respect the present
system is defective. lJut in the progress of improvement
in the State there is no doubt that
the liuppv result will be attained, which will. 1
give the Slate a plan of education, which will
insure an intelligent choice of law-makers ; in
