a letter received hy a Republican in that town
from a colored man named Stewart, recently
removed from that place to Kansas :
"C. P. Leslie, land commissioner, and soinetiinc
bmy ot. Barnwell County, is here, llo has'
enjoying perfect obscurity till I found him
out. Ho was very nervous on the subject of
being carried back to South Carolina for trial
till 1 mentioned io him the infamous compromise
that took place in Charleston in April. That
intelligence threw him in convulsions of joy.
Ho says that the only thing ho is sorry for is
that lie diil not steal the whole Slate
of South Carolina, and that if he had to do it
again, ho would try his level best to steal it ail ;
that none hut a fool would suppose n man was
going to risk his life in the South without stealing
whatever lie could get hold of. 'Taint human
nature, said (lie old veteran thief as he
wanned up with with his theme, lie has been
hero near two years. The people of Kansas
had better keep their eyes on the old scamp,

Copper's case has been reached, and the remains
of the Free Mason are ordered to receive sepulture
beside those of his mother in the Calvary
Catholic Cemetery. The case was bused upon
the refusal of (ho superintendent of the Catholic
Cemetery ground to allow the interment of
the body of Copper. After assuming various
phuses it finally came before Judge West brook,
whose decision is a lenghty one and reviews the
case and. the law, and bases the decision upon
the fact that the sale of a cemetery lot is an absolute
transfer.

November 1??.?The drought which has prevailed
to such an alarming extent in this section of the
State during the past three months is causing
great anxiety and uneasiness. Wells and streams
arc drying up, and in some adjacent counties
people are compelled to travel miles in vehicles
in search of water for family use. In several of
t he churches here to-day prayers were offered
lor the much needed rain.

quickly, so it is best to prepare but a small
quantity at a time.

steak from the bone lengthwise, in strips
weighing three or four pounds each ; sprinkle

in a layer of pieces} then sprinkle on more
salt, and put iu another layer, till all is used;

water to cover; alter a couple of weeks take
it out and drain ; rub the outside thoroughly
with pepper, tie strings in the stnalh r
etid of the pieces, and hang on a pole over
the kitchen stove ; two weeks will dry it ;
put in a linen bag and bang up in your
store chamber.
