In tuk Whono Ukhtii.?It was in a
Pullman '6lceper' Lctwoen Albany and Buffalo.
Among the passongers wcro a middle-'
'aged couple, cviaoully on their first journey,
aud a sour-faced old uiaid, rather desiccated
in her generul effect, who was travelling
alouc. Tho couple had an upper berth,
and the 'maiden well stricken in years' the
upper berth in tho adjoining soetion. In
luc same car wcro a couple ot frolicsome
youths, ready for auy sort of mischief. Bud
timo cauic, and all hands retired. But the
huebtrad eouM not sleep. Whether it was
because tho motion of the curs, the noise,
or tho novelty of tho situation, ho could
not tell, but, try as ho would, ho could uot
sleep. At length it occurred to him that
ho wus thirsty. The more ho thought of
it the more thirsty he got. So he culled the
porter, who brought tho ladder and helped
him down. Now, while ho was gone for
tho water one of tho "boys' stopped out of
bed aud shifted tho ladder so that it rested
against tho berth in which tho aucicnt
muidon wns sleeping, and then returned to
his bed to note tho result. In a moment
or two tho husbaud returned and crept
quietly up the steps, anxious to make as
little noiao as possibles so as not to waken
bis wife. The occupant of tho berth, thus
rudely intruded upon, awoke with a start
and screamed. Tho husband, supposing it
to be his easily frightened wife, tried to
reassure her aud said, 'It's only me.' 'Only
vou. vou old scountlrnil.' said the venomhln
maiden, 'I'll teach ycu u lesson,' anil with
that she seized hiui by the hair of his head
and screamed for help. Thcu ho howled
with pain. Then his wife, awakened by
the noise, discovered whero her husband
was, and raised b r voice iu lamentation,
heaping reproaches upon bcr faithless
spouso. The passengers alt got up, ami
demuudud an explanation of the coin notion,
and foremost among them wus the wretch
who caused it all. Then tho husband, covered
with confusion, and utterly unable to
account for what be bad done, climbed down
from his perch, and slunk away to bed,
whero he was Boundly lectured for bis
faithlessness. Altogether it wan a most uncomfortable
though a ludicrous situation,
and the glances of dcfiaucc that wore exchanged
hot ween tho wife and the old maid
all through the next day were a study.?
The cause of all the trouble leaked out,
but it uovcr reached tho ears of those
