Minerals in Union?Correspondents?Improvements.
Aciu'st 1st, 1870.
Mr. Editor I liave read with considerable
interest Mr. Sccry's coinmunicutiuu on the mineral
resources of the upper portion of Uuion
County ; but I was surprised to find ft man who
quoted Tuomey, spell Nuckolls with a K. It is
?- gratifying to know that there are sonie gentlemen
who have the menus, or the uerve, to invest
in any cntcrprizc which will tend toward the
Mi Uevclopeuicut of a country's resources; and
whatever tuny be one's opinion uboutthe profitableness
of mining, every step toward unmasking
\ the hidden wcalth.of u country is iu the right
direction. Every enterprise which attracts
w puuiic luiciii.i'u Mas u icnui'iiuv iu imuiiT mijr
migration from ubroad, to introducecapital, and
.L to give employment to tlio needy, wliich in the
B highway to prosperity. If I am not mistaken,
| Mr. Liebcr ia far more explicit than Tuoiney on
| the wealth of the mincrat resources in the neigh1
borhood Mr. Seery speaks of. Licber was an
V accomplished mineralogist aud went "con
fc* umore" into the details of his work, lie was n
1 correspondent of the most distinguished luiucr^
alogists in this country aud Europe, which gave
?!liim great facilities. Lieber was sanguine In
tho opinion that taking some point near Limestone
Springs and describing a circle ten miles
in diameter you would includo the richest min;
cral region of the State. Gold, silver, lead and
the matrix of the Diamond, are all known to cx>
ist in this area, and Licber fellas certain, in his
own mind, of his opinion as did the old Monk
wlicu ho assured his pool llock that the day was
noi^^Mistant when tlicy would all feel thank1
iiil^^Fblcssings they dreamed not of, which
were wow hiddcu under their feet.
It is gratifying to see a growing disposition
* on tho part of your patrons throughout the
County to contribute to your colutnus and keep
you posted upon the couditiou of the County.?
There is not a neighborhood in the County
wherein some one may not bo found who can
interest your readcrs on some subject, and every
one who attempts it, in ever so.smnll a way, wil'
be surptised by his owu improvement as well as
the interest ho begins to feel in his County's
prosperity. No one can read of successful
school examinations, Sunday School Exhibitions,
the building of new churches and new school
houses, without feeling that the moral toue of
the County is being elevated. While no one
can read ef the introduction of a new machine,
an improved agricultural implement, or the development
of some new industry, without a hope
of rcturuiug prosperity. ^
No man cau read of a big crop of any thing
buiug made without a desire to know how
it was done and a determination to improve by
tjie lesson taug!:i his neighbor.
The discussion of every subject is legitimate,
t x Let' us have opinions aud facts; but pray indulge
in no personalities?call nobody hard names? j
nnd nevor suspect auybody of ap improper tutlive.
Let your own inteutious be good aud you.'
will very rarely have any reason for finding reason
to suspect the motives of otIters.
A FRIEND.

T HAVE purchased the C. K. Macarlhy's
A Horse Power for this County and will tbc
pleased to sell to any one the right. 1 can say
with a great degree of confidence that it excels
any other horse power I have ever used to
gin Cotton with. Any one who has obi gearing
run down can attach the Macarthy Horse Power
with very little expense. I will slate that 1
can gin ns much with three mules with this
Power as can be done with four on any of the
cogs or trundle heads. The inventor claims a
greater power than this.
