On the night of the 3< t iqetant the gift of speech was suddenly bestowet youth, twenty-three years of age been known 113 a deaf mutt . by an GFtiNWKv citizens. Your Oak Lawn readers will remember Mar cus, a deaf mute boy,* aslavoof Col. T. E. Ware deccAsod, who was employed after the war hj Col. Ware's son-in-law, Mr. Arnold, as a hanti about the house and farm. His services wer< quite valuable, as he was an active, obedient, intelligent boy. lie frequently oume over t< Williaiuston as atcam3tcr, and thus became well known in our community. Eight years ago Mr. Arnold removed to Mis sissippi. Just before his departure, Marcui disappeared. No one knew whither he had goue. His mother tried in vniti to get informs tion of his wheroabouts. No tidings of him reached his friends at home until the last day ol June, when his return to the house of his uncle, Edward Jones, was as unexpected as his mystc rious departure years befqre. In the mean time he had learned to converse in writing, so that he found no trouble in coin municating his history during his long absence from home. Nothing noteworthy occurrod from Mondaj to Thursday tho 3rd instant. Ou that afternoon he heoame extremely nervous and restless, "hearing dreadful, loud noises, and seeming as if his head would burst with pain." This.condition continued till after nightfall. After something more than an hour, these symptoms relaxed, and ho broke his life-long siletice . by asking quite audibly, but not very distiuctly, | for a drink of water. At intervals of about fifteen minutes during the night, he continued to speak, saying nlmost anything he wished, but feeling fatigued after every effort. Ou the 4th, he spoke as occasion required, with increasing ease, freodom and clearness. On Saturday the 6tli, with several other gentlomen, 1 visited hitn, and conversed with him for about on hour and a half. He had no difficulty in hearing all we said ; and wo noticed considerable improvement in his articulation during interview. At first, lie declined trying to l>ronounce the word "Williams on," because lie said he cculd not pronounce it right; but, at the clone of the interview, he inadvertently protiouuced it very well. Tiie extent of his vocabulary, clearness of his articulation, the correctness of his vowel sounds, the accuracy of his occentuntion, and the general propriety of his language, wore matters ol great astonishment to us all. Suuday afternoon, he heard his first music, lie attended service at the colored Methodist Church, and the singing, which was right vigorous, overpowered him. He could not realize the distinctions of the sounds ; but it all seemed to him "like a loud noise blown through a straight horn." For the statement in conneotion with his strange attack on Thursday afternoon, I am indebted to Marcus himself and his uncle, Edmond Jones, whose character for veracity is unusually fair in our community. As to the other points in the above narrative, there is no room tor doubt. He was a deaf mute from his birth till he left here eight years ago. lie seemed to be in the same condition when he returned last Monday week, lie can hear and speak now as well as the majority of our people, llow the wonderful change was brought about, remains to be explained. Tho one advertised in tho newspapers, the other didn't. You can cosily guess the result, or, if you can't, other people eon. At the end of the second year, the one, with the help of printer's ink, had cleared some $'27,000, while the other, without the help of printer's ink, had cleared out with another man's wife, and was found by his creditors to have cleared nothing else from the start.?Raleigh Obterver. . Several cans of powder had been placed in a stateroom and a fusee attached to each. The lights were all extinguished and there waa the wildest excitement for a few momenta.
