Gaillnrd. one of the .colonists who went out from Charleston to Monrovia in the Axor in April, 1878, died near Monrovia on the loth of April last, and was buAd with Masonic honors. The letter further states that Irons has also been rick, but has recovered, and that the rest of the Charleston exodists are well. The death of Gnillard will prove a heavy blow to the exodists, ns he was one of the very few colonists who went out from here who had the advantages of education and menns. 0 ?. Hanged in a Thunder Storm.?Knlcigh, May 10.?Henry Alphonso Davis, (White,) Ileury T. Andrews, (white,) and Lewis Carlton (colored,) the noted Chapel Hill burglars, were to-day hanged at Ilillsboro', the county seat of Grange Couuty, where their numerous crimes were committed. All the prisoners proclaimed their innocence to the last moment. Carlton spoke an hour and said his salvation was sure. The partine bet wen Andrews and his sister on (lie scaffold was most affecting. All were firm and showed no signs of wavering. The hanging was badly botched up. The ropes around the necks of Dnvia and Carlton were too long, and their feet rested on the ground. They were raised and the ropes rcticd, causing death from strangulation. A terrific thunder storm raged during the hanging, and tlio scene was wild aud terrible. Burroughs drew a stick and Jose 1* Morris snapped his pistol at Burroughs, who commenced filing on his assailants and rctreatiug across the railroad truck, the Morris brothers advancing and emptying their pistols, I ken throwing rocks until both fell from their wounds.
