Frederick Stumpf, a St. Louis lawyer and
onco a member of the Missouri Legislature, has
just died, of a broken heart. Stumpf was a
cripple, and for yenrs had been the inseparable |
^ companion of Voullaire, a brother lawyer, who
^ was a deformed dwarf. The two were utterly
unlike, but their common misfortune attached
them so closely to e.ich other thet when Voullaire
recently died, Stumpf took to his bed and
died, smply because he did not cure to live without
his friend.

hnving jn caucus declared in favor of putting out
the publio printing by contract gives much satisfaction
to Democratic printers and others who
have not been favored with work at the Republican
government printing office. They will not
only get a chance to earn a livelihood, but it is
shown that the government can get the work
done at much cheaper rates than nt present by
tho adoption of the contract system.
A Public Building vor Greenville.?Senator
llutler wt II soon introduce a bill nppropiating
$50,000 for the erection of apublio building
nt Greenville, which will be used as a United
States Courtroom, postoffice, &c. There is a bill
pending in the Houso for the erection of a number
of such buildings at different points, and if
it pn?ses there Greenville can be added when it
comes to the Senate.

An exchange says, the Southern farmer cannot
prosper until he makes his provisions at
homo and raises cotton as an incidental crop.?
Give any family plenty of bread and meat and
it is independent. Cotton alone will not make
him comfortable, bccauso he must sell at other
people's prices and buy his supplies the same
wsy. The only remedy is plenty of piovisions.
A Railroad For Five Dollars.? Wilmington,
Del., February 19.?A special to the Every
Evening, pays that the Eastern Shore Tlniimn/i
?m aold this morning, at Princess Anne, Md.,
to the first mortgage bondholders for fire dollars,
subject to a lien of $400,000. The sale was in
pursuance of a decree of the Circuit Court of
Maryland, issued January 2d.

February 19.?The Senate to-day reduced the
salaries of State officials as follows : Governor,
$4,000; Secretary of State, $2,000; Auditor,
$1,750; Treasurer. $3,000 ; Attorney General,

additional pay for extra courts.

persona from Cleveland County, N. C., have
purchased 2,500 acres of land, embracing the
battle field of King's Mountain, fox the purpose
of establishing a sheep-farm. The purchasers
have capital sufficient to conduct this enterprise
