A Correction.

We regret that we cannot make room for a full
account of the delightful evenings spent by the
children, parents, teachers and others of the
Sunday Schools of the episcopal, Presbyterian (
Methodist and llapiist churches of this town
luring Christmas week. It will not loose any
of its interest by being postponed one week.

Got. Hampton's Condition.
The news from tiov. Hampton the past two
weeks has been most cheering. The old hero
and beloved statesman has been steadily improving.
His physicians say lie has passed the dangerous
crisis and, u.ilcss some unfavorable circumstance
occurs, he will be iu bis seal, as our
representative in the U. S. Senate, on the 4th
of March, or soon after.

j A Shooting Scrape near Santuc.
A dilliculty occurred one day last week, upon
Mr. J. T. Hill's platration, between Mr. .Mobley
11 ill and Mr. 1'. Thomas, in which the latter
was shot, the ball passing through the body just
above the stomach. Conflicting statements conic
to us as to the cause and circumstances of the
dilliculty, therefore it would be imprudent in us
to give any details. For some days it was feared
Mr. Thomas could not live, but wc are pleased
to slate that the last account gives us great hops
that he will recover.

We call attention to the advertisement of that

Colored Mechanics Dinner.
We were kindly favored with i n invitation to
attend a dinner given by the members of the
' Colored Mechanical Association" of litis town
la: t Monday. A business engagement preven
ted our attending, but we learn from friends
who were there that it was a very pleasant and
agreeable occasion. In this Association are
! many of our most worthy and industrious colored
men, who by industry and frugality are
gathering around them comfortable home piop'
erty, and by their upright conduct have secured
the respect and confidence of the whole commit
nity.

An unsuccessful attempt was made, about 3 p

Railroad depot. The burglars obtained en- v
trance to the office by forcing open the outside a
door. They then dragge I the safe to the door c
and with chisels and a hammer stolen from ,
Alien & Robinson's blacksmith shop, andachisel c
from Nicholson's Marble yard ? which they had c
tempered and prepared for cutting iron?cut off 8
the hinges of the safe and the handle of the *
combination lock. It is supposed that daylight

tered, while Mr. C. and a Mr. Taylor from Ken- J
lucky were asleep, and a small sum ot money j
taken from Mr. Cochran's trunk and his papers j
strewed over the floor. The trunk was stand- I ,

and Mr. C. firmly believes that both himself ami ;
Mr. Taylor were chloroformed, as about three j
o'clock he awoke much stupilicd. Fortunately |
he had deposited his money?-quite a large sum <
?in the bank that day. Mr. Taylor had about '

tin ier the pillow, but the thieves did not tin I it.

On Saturday night or early Sunday morning i '

wards found under the cotton platform at the >
railroad depot. It is supposed that the thief]'
had secreted himself in the building when the !
doors were closed for the night.

was popular or not. Our past is before the people

S ACT To Protect the Lands and Crops of die
Citizens of Abbeville Union, Newberry and
Laurens Counties froiu Trespass by Stock.
He it emeted by the Senate and House of Hepscnintives
of (lie Stale of South Carolina, now

Section 1. That in the Counties of Abbeville,
nion, Newberry and Laurens it shall not be
wful for the owner or manager of any horse,
ule, ass, genet, swine, sheep, goat or neat cute
of any description to permit thesaid animals,
- any of them, to run at large beyond the litu1
of their own land.
Sec. 2. That in said Counties, whenevor any
the said slock shall be found upou the lauds
' any other person than the owner, the owner
such stock shall be liable for all damages
istuincd, to be recovered by action of debt ill
iy Court of competent jurisdiction, and the
ock causing the damage shall be held liable for
te same in pt*ef< retire to all other liens, claims
r encumbrances against the same.
Skc. 3. Any person who shall maliciously,
nlawl'ully or negligently permit any of said

e deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and, upon
onviction thereof in a competent Court, shall
e lined in a sum not exceeding thirty dollars
r imprisonment for not more than thirty days,

Sr.o. 4. That tlie County Commissioners of
aid Counties, respectively, are directed to creel
, lawful fence on the limits of said Counties to
irotcct the lands of said Counties from all inursions
of stock or cattle from adjacent Connies,
and for that purpose enter the lunds of any
crson in said Counties and erect fences thereon
vithout being guilty of any trespass whatever;
md the said Commissioners shall have power to
lonstruct fettces across any public or private
imd and erect gates on all roads ; and the Couuy
Commissioners arc hereby authorized and
mipowcrcd to make such arrangements with the
iwtters of property contiguous on either side of
laid County lines as may accomplish the object
if protecting the Connies front the incursions of
tattle and stock.
Sue. 5. That any person who shall v ill fully
md unlawfully leave oper any of the aforesaid
;ates or do any willful damage to the gates or
ettecs erected for the purposes aforesaid shall
jo deemed guilty of si misdemeanor, and, on
ionviction in any Court of competent jurisdicton,
shall be titled in a sum not exceeding
weuly (20) dollars or imprisonment not more
ban twenty (2(1) days.
Sir. t>. Any person other than the owner or
heir agents moving or destroying any, portion
>f any fence intended to enclose animals of any
kind shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor,
and, upon cottvicliou thereof, shall be punished
hy a fine or imprisonment, or both, at the disincline
of the Court.
Sec. 7. That the County Commissioners of
arid Counties, respectively, shall he authorized
ltd instructed to levy and collect a tax upon
ho property of said County to defray tlie exlouses
of erecting and maintaining said fences,
