TUBHIKG GBAT.
Life's sands are running fast away.;
The buoyant step of youth is gone,
The falling hair is turning gray,
Ami Titno seeois now to hurry on
More fleetly than in days of yore?
lfeforc the heart became its prey?
lleforo 'twas saddened to the core.
Yes, turning gray ! Age comes like snowAs
still?and carves each careworn line ;
Its wrinkles on the brew will grow ;
The hair with stiver streaks will shine ;
The eyes their brightness lose, the hand
Grow dry and tremulous and thin;?
For life, alas! is quickly spanned,
And Death its gates soon closes in.
Ah ! turning gray ! We fain would hide,
The sign how long with Time we've been?
Those deepened wrinkles side by aide,
Cut by the sorrows we have seen;
>,.o<o it., i
More thickly cluster 011 our head?
As Autumn raiu-drops hang like tears,
On some fair flower that's nearly dead.
Like perished petals from the flower,
Our hopes and wildest joys are laid ;
Burn only for a Hay or hour,
Sweet gambols by the fancy played;
As ago comes on, we long for rest.
As saints near shrines will long to pray;
But still we lose that time the best
Before the hair is turning gray.

If I had known in the morning
How wearily nil the day
The words unkind
Would trouble my mind
I said when you went away,
I had been more careful, darling,
Nor given you needless pain.

Wo might never take back again.
For though in the quiet evening
You may give mo a kiss of peace,
Yet it might ho

That never come hoino at night;
And hearts have been breken
For harsh words spoken,
That sorrow can ne'er set right.

And smiles for the sometime guest,

The bitter tone,
Though we love our own the best.

Smoky Stoves.?The Scientific American
says : "There is a very simple way of
avoiding the disagreeable smoke r.ud ga?
which always pour into the room when the
fire is lit in a stove, heater or tire, on a damp
day. Put in the wood and coal as usual,
but before lighting them ignite a handful
of paper or shavings placed on the top ofj
the fuel. This produces a current of hot

Whooping Cough Remedy.?Ouepiut

quart of water and simmer to a pint, add
one pound of loaf sugar and one-half pint
of brandy; dose, from a few drops to one
teaspoonful, according to age. This remedy
will so Alleviate the rigors of the disease
that the weakest ennsfifuiinns nl.l?
bear it with little discomfort.
To Cukk a Born.?This has been tried
in a case of a child four years old, who had
been b?a\y burned. Suppuration was
abundant and bo offensive that thoy ordered
the child a tepid bath, contaiuiug a couple
of pinches sulphate of iron. This gave relief
to the pain, and being repeated twice
a day, 20 miuutes each bath, the child wai
soon well.

cents' woith of pure glycerine, and five
cents' worth of tincture of arnica; lay t
piece of white or black silk on a board and
paint it over with the mixturo.
('heksk Cakes.?Turn a quart of milk
with a spoonful of vinegar over the fire ;
drain the whey from the curd ; rub the
latter dry in a cloth ; add ten eggs well
beaten, with three-quarters of a pound ol
butter and the same of sugar. Flavor with
lemon, nutuicg, wine or rose water. La}

Gp.owleks.?There is a class of man in
every community who go about with vine
gar faces, because somebody feels above
them, or because they arc not appreciated
as they ought to ho; aud who have a con
stnnt quarrel with their destiny. These
nun, usually, have made a very grave mistake
in the estimate of their abilities.?
Wherever this fault-finding with ouc's con
dition or position occurs there is always a
want of self-respect. If people despise you,
do not tell it all over town. If you are
smart show it. I)o something, and keep
doing.
Society never estimate! a man at what
ho imagines himself to be. Ho must show
himself possessed of self-respect, independence,
energy to will aud to do, and a good
found heart. These qualites and possessions
insure him position and respect.

Tbyino to Live Without Work.?
The following from the pen of Horace
Greeley, is true nod applicable to this duy:
"Our people are too widely inclined to shun
the quiot ways of productive labor and try
to Hvo and thrive on the crooked paths of
sWoCN&jpn and needless traffic. We havo
deplored how few boys learn trades, with ten
times too many anxious to get into business;
that is to devise some scheme whereby they
may live without work. Of the journeyman
mechanics now at work in this city, we
judge that two-thirds were born in Europe,
and the disparity is steadily augmenting.
One milliQn families are trying to live by
selling liquors, tobacco, candy, etc., in our
cities, wh<ycould be spared therefrom without
the slightest public detriment ; and if
these were .transferred to the soil, and set
to grooving grain, meat, wool, etc., or employed
in smelting the uietals, or weaving
the fabrics for which wo are runuing iu
debt to Europe, our country would increase
its wealth at least twice as much as
it is uow, and thjb-o would be far loss complaint
of dull trade and hard times."
Self-Respect.?Always remember no
one can debase you but yourself. Slander,
sati^OjJalsebood, injustice? these can never
rob you of your manhood. Men may lie
about you, they may denounce you, they
may cherish suspicions manifold, they may
make your failings the target of their wit
or cruelty; never be alarmed; never swerve
an inch from the lino your judgment and
conscience have marked out for you. They
cannot by all their efforts tako away your
knowledgo of yourself, tho purity of your
motives, the iutcgrity of your character
and the generosity of your nature. While
these are left, you are, in point of fact, unharmed.
