For tbe Times. Fair Forest, June 8, 1878. Mr. Editor i?You will plenso allow me, one more Boreliead reply to flume few articles that have appeared in your paper recently. 1st. 1 see one correspondent says that news, paper flcrihhers commence just before an election t lint he may be noticed and that he may be marked down as one that wants ofhee. I judge the author knows mere about that than the writer of this, or he certainly would not have thought of it, for I can say with ctn4*r that I want no ? office.* My only object is to unite the Democratic vote on some plan that nil may lie harmonized and lead to certain success. Besides, if the above be true, who must write? If a man writes at all he is nu office seeker; if ho don't Write, your paper ie without news and the public sentiment is not disseminated throughout the various sections o( the County. 2d. "A word for conventions," calls for some notice ; you say plain enough that if a voter cutertains a different view to the above he is a disappointed aspirant, a sorehead or office seeker. If that be true, then the democrats of this Township are all soreheads office seekers, m pi f Slits &c. 1 think the assertion is too broad, one voter has as much right to his opinion "as another ; and further, if a man disapproves of the convention plan, is proof that he is incompetent for office ; a babbler cau speak in public and show off. And I notice farther, that those who oppose the convention plan have superiors. It is asserted that it is so. If so, my Township nil have superiors, and further, my Township wants all the offices the convention bus so nobly filled. Theso aro. telligent men in my township as the County affords. I don't think, if the Primary Election system is adopted, that we will have but tico candidates?one for re-election to the Legislature and one for County Commissioner. I don't thiuk this Township wants only a pro rata share of offices?and those according to qualification. We nsk for nothing but justice and our rights, and this we expect to contend for. This is the first time, since Gen. Lee's surv render, that the voters of Union County have L had an opportunity to vindicate their rights at fhc ballot box. Wc notice the plan of the Executive Committee. There were only nine present?five for Convention and four for Primary Election. The Committee was so nearly equally divided, why not have had a majority and a minority Circular, so that both sides'could,see tho true issue, as it ought to be, and that this sorehead, ignorant party might be convinced of their error and become Convention men before the 3d day of July and fall in ranks with the intelligent. A word to clubs: Get all the Democratic voters possible to sign your Clubs: and I say remind them that their fore-fathers left them tho best government the sun ever shone upon, from tho days of Washington un to the vear 1800. and that nil nien were allowed to run for office that wished to. The only difference between the primary and the old plan, is that it unites us upon the general election, so that the State Ticket will get a full support from the County. You will sec in the Circular from the Executive Committee (a portion of them) three or four big bugbears ; one of them is that we will have so many candidates that it is hardly possible for a majority to be had. Was this the ense in the days of our fathers thnt n candidate had to have a majority vote before he could take his scat of office ? No, and no need of it now ; and this is one chauco to give the soreheads and aspirants, and office seekers a chance to sec how unpopular they are in other sections of the County, and, as the old adage is, "break them from sucking eggs." One of tlie other objections is that two or three of the largest Townships will unite and put in their own candidatcs?in other words, log roll. This is just as absurd as it is unjust. The country people have their eyes opcu to the task before them. The largest, the last, but the least objection.? The incompetent, oUioo seeker getting the colored Republicans to unite with the clubs fo elect Jiim in the primary election. This needs but little comment. You may just as well try to move Tryon Mountain ftom North Carolina to Union C. II., as to get a coloicd Republican to put his name to a Democratic Club list, and bo. sides. the sheep know their Shepherd and (hoy will follow him, and no one else. We knuw,our Democrats, we waut them and we will get-them all if the Primary system is adopters I havo my fears if not. As for myself 1 expWt to vote for whatever plan that may be adopted by the people. CITIZEN. - Gov. Hamilton's Visit to Hayes.?Washington, June (1.?Governor Hampton's visit to Hayes had for its object the release ef several persons imprisoned at Albany, convicted under the Ku Klux prosecutions, whom Gov. Hampton believes were illegally convicted. Hayes promised an early investigation, and ussured Hampton if Kxocutive clemency was merited he would not hesitate to extend if; -?
