Yes, there arc a few exceptions, among our editors, who in their papers sometimes try to aw ike the mind of the people, and some few mechanics from the .Worth who havo immigrated here, and who "are working hard against tho stream in laying tho foundation of home industry.? Haay amongst you will say, "Wo got things iff cheap from the North that it would be .no use to try-th compete with tho North." TWii shows how . little confidence wc havo how'small an opinion wc Tjfcap* ?f the richness of J?ur soil, which in every way is so lavishly bestowed on us by Mother Nature I am young in years, but I have seen the world, and in my tifteeu years of travel, in which I have rambled all over this great Union, from east to west, from north to south, over Mexico, South America, Australia, Alrica, China, and over the whole of the European continent, I have never seen a better, a healthier, and, lor manufactures, a more suitable country than the upper part of South Carolina. Is not our State gifted with all the materials necessary to utilize these waters '! Forests and Timbers.?Sec our forests I The pine trees arc waiting for the axemen to fell them to be hauled to the saw mill, moulding and planing machines, there to be turned into prepared lumber, with which to build and furnish lor us comfortable houses and furniture. Now. instead of the luxury of a comfortable home, we live in log huts, and the soft side of a rough plank is our bed. There, too, are the oak and hickory, also waiting to be cut and manufactured into spokes, felloes, pick and axe handles, wagons, ?.te. The willows on the creeks grow and die where idle hands might be employed in basket work. Cotton.?What are we doing with our cotton ? We sell it to the North or to England to be worked into different cotton fabrics, and in the latter shape it comes back to us again, and we, as a good people, knowing no better, pay all the freight, commission, manufacturing cost and other expenses, with a heavy interest, and admire j the wonders of the water powers of the j North, which, with the help of machinery, are made from tho fruits of our soil and J with our money. How many people could we not employ in such enterprise '( Well, my friends, tho time is 1 hope not far away when wo will make our own prints and other fabrics, and give our Northern friends a chance to buy from us. Wool.?llow much wool yearly leaves our State, bought from us at a trille 'I We buy this wool back again at cuormous price in tho shape of woolen goods, such as clothing. blankets, hats, &c. Many of you wear to-day a pound of wool in the shape of a Hampton or Tildeu hat, the original cost of which was tliirtv conU !in/l nr.w - ; ^ ? > J'*" costs you ?3. Is it worth two, three or lour dollars to make such a hat ? I guess not. J/1'</is.?llow niauy hides arc yearly shipped to Jialtiuiorc and New York to be returned again in leather or in the shape of | boots and shoes? And what kind of an article do we got in exchange ? Why, the uiost interior in the world ! Instead of boots and shoes of 1 nil stock, we get them of the worst kind of manufacture, as are made from split leather with shoddy work. Why don't we tau our own hides and make our own boots and shoes? There is tiinber uuough ii> tho upper part of South Caroliua to run fifty large tanneries for years, and how many have we got? Hardly any ! The tanners of the North pay from SI- to 818 for a eord of hark and live by it. We can got any amount of it from 83 to ?(> per cord. The tanners South are obliged to sell their rough stock to Haltiinorc and I Noothcrn markets, where it is finished, sold then to Northern shoe manufacturers, and ' our owu leather couics back to us as Northern lea'her, in harness, boots and shoes.? Many of you wear to day a pair of Northern boots or shoes made of Southern stock. The general opinion here is that leather and shoo material manufactured hero is of no account. In this you aro mistaken.? Encourage your tanners. Soli them good hides, uud 1 warrant you thoy will give you good artioles back again. Iron.?By hunting around your farm premises, you will fiud old iron enough to make farm implements, mill gearing and other iron ware to lust you for fifty'vours.? Gutfcoi yous old iron before it becomes ^worthless. Start a foundry?we havo pi no a gol>d cigar, good smoking or chewing tobacco ? What becomes of the tobacco L! 1- --- ? 11 * n * ' which you raise r Most ot it is shipped to the North and comes hack to you in tho shape of Ilavaua cigars, or of Durham suiokiug or some brand of chewing tobacco. You get froui eight to fifteen cents for your weed, and after it lias been sent North and been flavored a little, you buy it back at from sixty cents to one dollar and over a pound for smoking tobacco, or pay for it iu the shapo of cigars from 5 to 15 cts apiece. Fruits and Vegetables.?Just see tho large amount of peaches, tomatoes, berries, peas, &c., which you ship to the North for which you get but a trifle, and then when winter couics you pay cuormous prices for the fruits of your own soil by going to some store keeper and buying a cau of Baltimore canned tomatoes or peaches. My frietnl?, I could go on for a whole day iu showing you what wo cau and what we don't do, but 1 know that you will all say, "How cau wo start such enterprise when we don't know how to do it?" 1 will tell you how. Encourage immigration. Through it you will encourage home manufacture. Induce the right kind of immigrants to come here, aud 1 assure you that iu less than no time you will see home iudustry flourish, and our beloved l'aluutto State iu a prosperous aud healthy condition. Before I close my essay, I will give you some statistics of the amount of money which yearly leaves our State never to return : Supposing we have, at a low guess, 700,Q00 inhabitants in this State, aud put down, as an average, 830, which arc spent "by young and old during one year?it gives us the small sum of 821,000,000. Then put down 700,000 with two pair of shoes or boots a year, at an average of 82 per pair, 82,800.00. 100,000 sides of leather, such as sole, upper and harness leather, at 88 a side or skin, 8300,000. 100,000 inhabitants who smoke or chew tobacco at an av.......... ?? clfl ot n/.H ...... ...... ^.Uj^u ui viv u juur, C1,WUU,UUU. No wonder we arc poor, then, if this sum leaves our State yearly, never to return.? Why can't we keep it here ? If we try we can, and 1 hope we will all join hand in hand, and lift our State, by agriculture and home manufacture combined, to that station where she ought to be. Sensihle Advice ahout Kcus, comes from a friend, "J.," Hartford, Conn., whose approach to the age of SO, shows that he has paid proper attention to his diet, lie says: "1 suppose it is generally admitted,. I hat the best way to cook eggs, so far as health is concerned, is to boil them soft,say three minutes. If they are boiled three minutes, the white will be cooked hart/, and the yolk will not he cooked at all. This way, therefore, does not allow us to cook, eggs so as best to promote health Eggs should not be boiled at all; they should bo "coddled" and perfectly soft when cooked. IIow to Coddle Edos.?Put the eggs into a vessel of water at a temperature of one hundred and sevouly (170?) degrees Fall., and keep the water at that temperature from ten to iiftccn minutes, when the eggs may be taken out, and the white will he a line jelly, and the yolk will he cooked Soft. The quantity of water should be so large, that the introduction of the eggs will not materially reduce the temperature. The I'll* in Poultry.?Poultry arc sometimes troubled with a disease known as "pip." This is inflammation of the tongue and mouth, with the growth of a horny scale on the point of the tongue, which prevents the fowls from feeding, (live each fowl a pinch of powdered chlorate of potash, dropping it into the throat and upon the tongue and remove the scale with the point of a penknife. Fresh Manure J!ai> for Potatoes.? I Fresh manure is hurtful to potatoes. This I crop needs old well-rotted manure, or the tubers are apt to be scabby, and to bo infes! ted with white worms. Fresh manure may be used for corn without any ill effects.? The corn rather likes it. There arc no potatoes so clean and free from blemish, as ! tho-o grown with the artificial fertilizers.
