c Tj postoffice department lias received a letter mom tbo postmaster at Sandy Itook, Ky., . whijh say*: On the night of the 22d instant, one-half the town was burned, including the potlollice and its entire contents. The fire was incendiary, being caused by a band of desperadoes, their purpose being to rob the mail*. The postmaster reports the band still at large, and says they now threaten his life, and further that 4^ the authorities are unable to artist the thieves. He advises the department to discontinue mail service at that point until a sufficient fl)rce can be had to arrest the entire gang. The department has the matter under consideration. Juixie Noiithopto be District Attorney.?A Special dispatch to the Charlestoa Journal of Commerce from Chattanooga, where President Hayes was stopping at the time, says there is "the best authority" for stating that Judge L. C. Northrop will receive the appointment of United State District Attorney for South Caroli na, and that this statement may be regarded as official. This declaration gives the'black eye to Judge Carpenter's aspirations.
