The Kanian Reverses. A Lou of Five Thousand Men at I'levnm Officially Admitted. London, August G.?An official dispatch published in St. Petersburg admits the loss of upwards of five thousaud men at l'levua, including one colonel killed, and a major-general and two oolonels wounded. The dispatch also admits that Qen. tiourko has been obliged to retreat. Vienna, August 6.?The Political Correspondonoe's Searo special Bays that after a seven ?- . ^hours' engagement, on August 4th, the Russians, under Gen. Despotonich. were defeated ^ith great less. Despotonich with three hundred ? followers, was compelled to cross the frontier into Austrian territory, where he was "interned" and disarmed. The Ruuiant Abandon Selvi. London, August 6.?a. m.?The Times' Bucharest correspondent reports the occupation of Selvi by the Turks, and adds that tho Russian forces are between 8elri and TirnoTa, holding strong defensive positions. (Jen. Gourko is charged with the duty of protecting the southern outlets of the Balkan passes. The Daily News' Vienna correpondent sends 'the following : "Strategically, the most important news from the seat of war is the occupation -Of Selvi by the Turks. This exposes Tirnova and the passes. Gen. Gourko's corps is said to be short of provisions and ammunition. Rustchuk is no longer invested from the land side, and communications with Shumla were opened |h yesterday. Gen. Gourko has sent word to TirB nova that his foroes are too scattered to protect tho Christians in various places against the certainty of massacre." The Times' correspondent before Plevna, writing on August 2, says : It is hardly probable that any renewal of the attack will be made for the next ten days, as the Russians need time to bring up reinforcements." The Times' Berlin correspondent telographs that, oonsequeut upon the defeat at Plevna, the ^ Csar has asked the Emperor of Austria to with draw his former protest against the Russians entaring Servia, ana, conjointly with the Servians, operating on the left flank ef the Turks. The Standard's Buohareat dispatch reports that the Russians did not oppose the occupation ?f Selvi. The Turks at Plevna have received a reinforcement of four thousand Albanian cavalry. s The London Standard's Pesth correspondent telegraphs that financial arrangements are being complotsd for the mobilization of 00,000 Ausa trlan troops to take place in a few days. ^ A special from Woolwich, England, says that Ml Vtuw n? mviivu m uig ivu/u ATBSDU on 8aturday for five hundred tons of shell to be sent to Malta by private ships. The whole was te be embarked during yesterday and to-day. The Brotherhood or Engineers.?Mr. P. M. .Arthur, chief of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, has published a letter, ia which he reiterates his former denial that the recent strike was a premeditated one, or that the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers had anything to do with it. He also says that, admitting that the society sympathised with the strike of the train men and believed they were justified in revising to work under the last reduction, and in persuading and hiring others not te take their places, "beyond that they had no right to go, no matter how muoh they felt aggrieved, and all those who have resorted to violence have forfeited all claim to public sympathy, and are looked upon and treated as outlaws." Mr. Arthur explains the object and workings of the organisation of whioh he is ohief, and says that body has prevented strikes on thirteen different roads, within three years, by a system of conferences and negotiations.? The Lots by Strikes.?The loss by strikes end obstruction to business for fire days on the five trunk lines of railway, including destruction of the property of the Baltimore and Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroads, is estimated at $26,260,0001 The New York Journal of Commerce reaohee the result in this wise : Taking as a basis the cost to the railroads resulting from the suspension of traffio, an average of $40,000 Sir day te each -ef the five makes the total of 200,000 ; add $60,000 as a low calculation for losses by interruption of other roads, and the tetal is $60,000 per day, or $1,260,000 for the five suspension. The losses sustained by the Pennsylvania at Pittsburg and on the line between that city and Harrisburg are calculated at $10,000,000. Half ef that amount would scarcely oever the oost of property destroyed on the Baltimore and Ohio, and it is likely that $10,000,000 would approximate the losses of railroad property other than those which have been enumerated. This makes a total of $28,260,000. The lessee sustained by the community at large Is almost unealoulable, embracing the destruction ef perishable freight and live stock, the detention of passengers, the support of miliatia and'special officers summoned to preserve the pease, inconvenience attending tardy mails, inorease cost of living consequent upon the adW vance in prices ef provisions, augmented taxation, and perhaps the bankruptcy of corporations which might otherwise have been aveited. Hinderhoper's division is stretched along the road for twenty miles, guarding it from the blockade and destruction. Affairs throughout tho valley are quieting down. The Lehigh and Susquehanna company will not attempt to open the road for several days yet. July 27 29 4t A Tragedy at Bkuxson's.?Branson's, August 6.?Last evening, about dusk, Mr. B. J. Martin was shot and instantly killed by Mr. T. T. Gill. They had quarrelled, and Mr. Gill had gone home to avoid Mr. Martin. The latter followed the former to his house, armed and cursing him. When within ten feet of his door, Mr. Gill shot Mr. Martin down, and then fired into him again. Either shot would have been fatal. OBIUAltY. EZELL.?Died, at Woodruff, S.
