THE HOUSEKEEPER.
Sweet Rusks.?One quart uew uiilk,
thioo tublespooufuls yeast, flour to make a
thick batter; w'x. at night, and in the morning
add one cupful fresh iard and one oupful
sugar rubbed together, three eggs well
beaten, preserving the white of one; boat
this to a stiff froth j add a little sugar, and
spread over the top. Thej are cxcellout.
Green Corn Fritters.?Grate a sufficient
number of ears of ripe corn to make
a quart; rub togother quarter of a pound ot

- ouuor, quarter 01 a pounu 01 sugar, and three
tablespoonfuls flour, a pinch of salt; stir
into this ouo quart of rioh milk, eight eggs,
well boaten, and lastly tho green com ; if
not thick euough a little more flour may bo
added; fry in hot butter, or bake in a pudding
dish.
Cold in the Head.?This can bo cured
at odcc, if taken carc of at tho very beginning.
Dissolve a tablespoon i'ul of boras in
a pint of hot water; lot it stand until it bocomes
tepid; snuff some up tho nostrils two
or three times during tho day, or use the
dry powdered borax like snuff, taking a
pinch as often as required. At night havo
a handkerchief saturated with spirits of camphor,
place it near the nostrils, so as to inhale
the fumes while sleeping.

for a method of rapid telegraphing ol
fac similes of stereotyped plates. It is
claimed that by this process an entire page
of a newspaper can be transmitted by telegraph
in from Gftecn to thirty minutes, delivering
the copy directly from the instrument
iu such form that it can bo handed
immediately to the printers. In other words,
the copy will be a substantial reproduction
of thoorigiual. except thai it may be given in
a larger sized lcitor, if so desired. The stcretype
plate requires no preparation for the
purpose of telegraphic transmission other
than the filling of all dopi-cssions or spaces
bct.Tcen the faces of the letters with a nonconducting
substuuee, which may be quickly
applied, the faces of the type being left
clean by means ol an equally simple process.
The plate thus prepared is placed upon a
cylinder arranged to rerolvo rapidly so as
to present each successive letter to Cngcra
attached to a travelling frame. As the
cylinder bearing the plates revolve, the
frame gradually advances by the opcratiou
of a screw, aud thus each and every lino is
successfully presented to tlio fingers or
magnetic points already mentioned. Necessarily

itself to the lingers, the circuit is closed,
and the corresponding magnetic points or

receiving statiou.
Pigs and Snakes.?A farmer living on
the west side of the Ohio river, iu waiting
about his farm, d:scovereu a nest of rattlesnakes
iu the hollow bark of an old tree,
about which several large p'eccsof rock lay
scattered. Having heard thai pigs were
hostile to snakes of all kinds, and not caring
to attack the nest himself, he thought he
would try the experiment aud see a light,
lie drove several pigs Iu the vicinity of the
nest, aud watched the result. The pigs
600D seemed to scent the reptiles, and commeuced
rooting eagerly about the spot. In
an instant half a dozou of the vicious serpents
emerged from their hiding-places to
attack the iutrudeis, who manifested a zealous
disposition to give battle. A snake
would rear himself to the height of the hack
of the pig, slia"kc his rattle, aud plunge his
fangs iuto the animal with lightning-like
celerity, and then dart away, pursued by the
pig, who dexterously received the sting upon
the fleshy part of the jaw. Over and over
again this would be repeated, until the pig
got his forefoot upon the snake, when he
would deliberately rip tiie reptile iu twain
aud devour him. This slaughter continued

its exciting features, declares himself

suggestions to mothers of alllicted children
:
We hope that mothers will remember that
good brandy is a cure for summer complaint;
iu bad cases a teaspooui'ul iu milk three or
four times a day.
A flannel cioth, wot iu hot brandy, or better,
camphor and brandy mixed and heated,
will relieve the pain of the bowels, if frequently
laid over the stomach and bowels.
Bits of scraped ice are better on the toDgue
than drinks of water.
For stings and poisons, a strong solution
ot suierntus and water immediately anil thon
frequently applied, gives reliefand sure cure.
For buriiH, an immediate application of
flour covering the burn and wrapped so as
to exclude the air; then burn lard till it is
quite brown and apply, and relief and ourj
will soon oomo. Do not wash off the flour
^ if it clings, but put the lard over it.
At night, in extremo warm weather, a
lemon squeezed in tepid water, to sponge off
the tired-out little body, will give rest to
both the mother and child. Saleratus is
good, but the lemon is best. I'lven washing
off the little feet, neck and palms of the
hands in tepid, nover very eolu, water, will
induce n healthful sloop.
