Hampton's Portrait "Wai>k Hampton, Governor or Sooth Carolina," is the subject of an exquisite nearly lifc-aixe engraving, juat published (and now , ready) by our enterprising friends, Walker, Evans & Cogswell, Charleston, S. C. We cont gratulate these gentlemen on the grand success . they have made of so noble a subject. As a work of art it stands unrivalled, but still its chief merit lays in its being a life-like portrait. it is the first product, on so large a scale, of a j new and secret process based on photography, a having the advantage of great truth/ulnese. As the photograph has superseded the oil-painting, because ot its exact reproduction of the subject, .... tLU U I A (.1.. What - the people want in a portrait is truth?they do uot wish thv artist's conception of a man, but the face and features of the man as he is?and by no means can this grand result be better attained than by the means of photography, and this new process bnsed thvrcon. Hut while these * great advantages are secured, it admits of the embellishments of art, and a portrait is produced possessing all the truthfulness of a '' photograph, with the artistic effect of the i* steel engraving. The publishers have been extremely fortunate in their selection of the mod* by which they give to all admirers of the great statesman the aoble, generous, manly features, which speak so plainly the gieat mind, elevated i, feeling, and generous heart of Wade Hampton. Those who worked for the grand cause, "Hampton and Home Rule," who have paid tax, cs to the government of their chotoe, can now place this picture at their firesides, ns they'have placed its subject in their hearts. It must be. come one of the "l'enates" of South Carolina.
