What the people want in a portrait is trulk ? they do aot wish the artist's conception of a man, but tho face and features of the man as b# Is?and by no means can this grand result be bettor attained than by the means of photography, and this new process based thereon. The publishers have been extremely fortunate in their selection of the mods by which they give to all admirers of the great statesman the noble, generous, manly features, which speak so plainly tho gicat mind, elevated feeling, and generous heart of Wade Hampton. Those who worked for the grand cause, "Hampton and Home Rule,,r who have paid taxes to the government of their choice, can now place this picture at their firesides, as they have placed its subject in their hearts. It must become one of the "Penates" of South Carolina. Those who sympathized with the gallant little State in the struggle against such tremendous odds, will be plensed tq have this portrait in their homes?a glorious memento of a peaceful, noble effort of a liberty-loving people to redeem themselves from oppression and misrule. it will be sold by subscription only, at $2 per copy. Feb 9, G Tf Marshal's Portrait of Hampton. There aro two distinct portraits of Got. Hampton. The one issued by the "Hampton l'ortrait Company," of Charleston, S. C., is engraved in line by Mahsiiai.i., and will be of imposing appearance, and life-size. There is also a print out representing the Governor. We suggest that our people wait and see both pictures, beforo choosing which they will have. Marshall's famous engravings are attracting unusual attention. The superb largo line engraving of Washington, from Stuart's celebrated oil portrait in the Boston Athenaeum?a plate valued nt ten thousand dollars?when originally brought out about ten years ago, at once placed Mr. Marshall in the very front rank of engravers, aucient or modern, meeting, both in Knrope and America, tlie most extravagant encomiums of artists, critics, and men of judgment. It was even selected for exhibition at the French Academy of Design, an honor accorded to none but the very highest worka of art. it is, uioreovertho best, indeed the only satisfactory, portrait of Washington that exists, and is the acknowledged standard "household engraving" of him. The late Kdwnrd Kverett said of it: "The magnificent engraving of Stuart's head of Washington. It is truly a superb work." Bancroft, the historian, writes : "I have been for some years a collector of ihe many different engra vings of tho portraits of Washington. This is beyond comparison Ihe best of them all?tho only one that is perfectly satisfactory." Mr. GeorgcS. Millard, the well known art critic, says: "Were it the head of some unknown person, a lover of art would be glud to have a copy of tho engraving for its raro intrinsic merits, and every American should be ready to make some sacrifice in other ways in order to possess so satisfactory a representation of Washington." Marshall s R. E. Lee, just out. is a wonderful work, nod iu a few days his "Gov. Hampton" will go to the people of South Carolina and the country, a noble tribute to a great leader, who conquers by bis high character and by peaceful means, not by tho sword.?A'mm and Courier.
