work of art it stands unrivalled, bat still its
chief merit lays in its being a lift-like pot trait.
It is the first product, on so large a scale, of a
new and secret process based on photography,
having the advautage of great trvthfulneet. As
the photograph has superseded the oil-painting,
because oi its exact reproduction of the subject,
so this process is bound to tako the place of steel
engraving, or any method which depends upon
artistic conception and execution for result*?wo
I mean for the production of portraits. What
the people want in a portrait is truth ?they do
not wish the artist's conception of a man, but
the face and features of the man as he is?and
by no means can this grand result be better attained
than by the means of photography, and
this new process based thtrcon. But while these
great advantages are secured, it admits of the
embellishments of art, and a portrait is produced
possessing all the truthfulness of a
photograph, with the artistic effect of the
steel engraving. The publishers have been ox- '
tremoly fortunate in their selection of the mode
by which they give to all admirers of the great
statesman the noble, generous, manly features,
which speak st) plainly the gicat mind, elevated
fooling, and generous heart of Wade Hampton.
Tlioso who worked for the grand cause,
"Hampton and Home Rule," who have paid taxes
to the government of their clioico, can now
place this picture at their firesides, as they have
placed its subject in their hearts. It must become
one of tho "Penates" of South Carolina.
Those who sympathized with the gallant little
State in the struggle against sucht tremendows
odds, will be pleased to have this portrait in
their homes?a glorious memento of a peaceful,
noble effort of a liberty-loving people to redeem
themselves from oppression and misrule.
