The readers of the Journal of Commerc* will remember tlmt the store of Shaffer & Ferry at Walterboro', was entered by burglars las week and robbed of almost the entire contents The thieves captured a wagon load of groceries and were tracked to some distance from the town The parties robbed were Chamberlain officials Radical?Sheriff and Demitv of last vonr?? ?<! it was a party of tlieir constituents who robbed them. When the rice plantation riots took place last fall,.these gentry played powerless to check them. Hut now things have changed, Hampton ii Y Governor of the^tate, they are the losers, and they at once appealed to Sheriff Block, Democrat, for tho arrest of the thieves. Warrants were issued by one of the justices appointed by Governor Hampton. A posse of ten men was sworn in by tho Sheriff, and the thieves were followed. Several of the thieves (an organized gang)were arrested, butsomeof them announced that they only recognized Chamberlain, their master, and that they would uot submit to arrest. Theoverlook the thief and his supporters near Blue House, but tho Chamberlain supporters outnumbered the Sheriffs posse, and the latter retired after having been fired upon by the thieves. The negroes soon gathered in full force ns they did during the rice field riots, and swore that <.ho thief should not be arrested : This thing was managed by an officer of the law, however, and "the result was quito different from tho losult in the rice field riots, when Chamberlain was Govcnor of the State. The Sheriff scut out couriers in every direction to summon a posse, and to vn.jr uuum mree nun<tre<l well armed white men responded to his snninious. They gathered nenr Whitehall, at Calf Pen, and announced themsolvos as being to obey orders. The ncgioes to the number of about eight hundred had assembled at the same place. The women were armed with hoes, rice hooks and rakes, and the men with State rifles. The whites, who constituted tho Sheriff's posse, consisted of Captain Elliott's militia company, from Combahcc, and & detachment of armed citizens, under Mr. Flshburne, from Waltcrboro. Sher' . >* iff Black had conunnnd of the posse. The ne^urocs who protected the thieves, were formed in on the opposite side of the railroad track, for n while things looked threatening. The Sheriff did not mince matters, lie ordered his posse to dismount and charge the rioters. They obeyed the order and went in to capture the thieves, Tho negro rioters broke and run at once, without firing a shot. Even the women throw down their weapons and dusted. Abut fifteen or tweuty of the thieves were captured, disarmed and sent to Walterboro. The Sheriff and his posse arc following the balance of the rioters. No blood was shed. tTho gang of thieves who have been arrested e evidently tho same crowd who burned and robbed the two stores of Mr. J. B. Bisscll during the last two months. This is rendered certain by the fact that some of the goods stolen from Mr. Bissell's store wero founu in the possession of tho thieves who were captured Jour, of Commerce. Two of those Judges were put on the bench expressly to protect the interests of railrond corporations, and to reverse a former decision of tlie same tribunal. It is capable of proof that they bargained iu advance, and that their opinion were well known before they were confirmed by the Senate. The decision by which the Pacific railroads were relieved from the payment of interest until the maturity of their bonds was to have been expected, and was known in this city to the great speculators two weeks before tlicopin? *ipn was delivered in court. Who betrayed the confidence of the tribunal is not a perplexing qut^i9* to those who are familiar with ?lio methods by which other valuable secrets from the same source hbve been procured, by menus of which hundreds of dollars have changed hands. r*--> There arc Justices?not all, we are glad to say ?sitting 011 the bench who notoriously carry in their pockets, und without any sense of shame in using theiu cither, freo passes on railroads, .free stamps for express companies, and free stamps for t lie telegraph. All these corporations have frequent and important litigations, and it is not only reprehensible, but indecent, that Judges who are to try such cases should receive favors which, at tlie very least, compromise their independence. There are also Judges who would scornfully reject offers of this kiud, and who, like the men that have reflected honor on the Supreme Court, couid not be possibly approached with a sugges* lion-of impropriety. They feel the discredit which has been broug it upon the tribunal, aud especially by the crowning infamy which lias destroyed its character and usefulness. Reconstruction is the last hope for reviving the ancient dignity'of the court, and thatjwill not perhaps be practicable for years to some. The work of planting eucalyptus or fever trees along the right of way of the Central and Southern Pacific railways, recently begun, will probably occupy about two years. Tlicy will be set out in triple rows along the entire length of both ro&ds, and along the branches as far as practicable. The principal object is to secure a constant supply of the best possible wood for telegraph p^es and railroad sleepers, as well as an increase in the amount of rain fall. Sleepers of Kucalyptxti Roslrala have been known to last over twelve years, and have heretofore teen imported from Australia. When will our people quit this business ? The gardener of the University of Berlin has made the discovery that hyacinths may be proyagated by their leaves. He cuts them close to tho bulb, places them in a saucer, and covers with a thin layer of sandy leaf monld. The saucer having been placed in a greon house, the extremities of the leaves will begin to tern dry in about eight weeks, a sure sign that bulbs arc ^ growing out of them. w Kdmunds was absent from tho Supreme Court room during 'lie argument on the South Carolina case, but came in in season to vote for his party and for Rkturninu Boahd IIayks.
