The readers of iho Journal <>/ Commerce wil/ reiueinher that the store of Shaffer X Ferry at Waltcrborn*. was entered by burglars lusi week and robbed of almost the entire contents The thieves captured a wagon load of groceries and were tracked to some distance from the town The parties robbed were t'hatnberlain oiliciuls, Radical?Sheriff and Deputy of lasi year?and it was a party of their constituents who robbed them. When the rice plantation riots took place last fall, these gentry played powerless to check them. I'.ut now things have changed, Hampton is , Governor of the State, they are the losers, and they at once appealed to Sheriff Hlack, Democrat, for the arrest of the thieves. Warrants were issued by one of the justices appointed by Governor Hampton. A posse of ten men was sworn in by the Sheriff', and the thieves were followed. Several of the thieves (an organized gang)were arrested, but soineof litem announced that they only recognized Chamberlain, their master, and that they would not submit to arrest. The posse overlook the thief and his supporters near Ulue House, but the Chamberlain supporters outnumbered the Sheriff 's pos.n\ and iiic inner retired alter having been tired upon by tbc thieves. The negroes soon gathered in full force as they did during the rice field riots, nii'l swore that the thief should not I>e arrested : This thing tvus managed by an officer of the law, however, and the result was unite different front the ; esolt in the rice field riots, when Chamberlain was tlovenor of the State. TheSlicritf sent out couriers in every direction to summon a posse, and today about thvee'Hundred well armed white men responded to his summons. They gathered near Whitehall, at Calf I'en, and announced tliciuaolvosas being ready to obey orders. The negtoes to the number of about eight bundred bad assembled at the same place. The women were armed with hoes, vice hooks and rakes, and the men with State titles. The whites, who constituted the Sheriff's fosse, consisted of Captain lilliott's militia company, from Combuhec, and a detachment of armed citizens, under Mr. Flsliburne, from Walterboro. Sheriff Black had command of the /?<??se. The nc^MLt'oes who protected the thieves, were formed in on the opposite side of the railroad truck, for a while things looked threatening. The Sheriff did not mince matters, lie ordered his posse to dismount and charge the riot- I ers. They obeyed the order and went in to cap- j lure the thieves, The negro rioters broke and run at once, without firing a shot, liven the women throw down their weapons and dusted. Abut fifteen or twenty of the thieves were captured, disarmed and sent to Walterboro. The Sheriff and his posse are following the balance of the rioters. No blood was shed. 4?The gang of thieves who have been arrested arc evidently the same crowd who burned and robbed tbc two stores of Mr. J. B. Bissell dur ing the last two months. This is rendered certain by the fact thai some of the goods stolen front Sir. Bissell's store were found in the possession of the thieves who were captured Jour, of Commerce. ? Two of those Judges were put on the bench expressly to protect the interests of railroad corporations, and to reverse a former decision of the same tribunal. It is capable of proof that they bargained in advance, and that their opinion were well known before they were confirmed by the Senate. The decision by which the Pacific railroads were relieved from the payment of interest until the maturity of their bonds was to have been expected, and was known in this city to the great speculators two weeks before theopin*ipn was delivered in court. Who betrayed the " confidence of the tribunal is not a perplexing OU(*>UO?I to those who are familiar with ihc methoiTs by which other valuable secrets from the same source have been procured, by means of which hundreds of dollars have changed hands. All these corporations i have frcip'.ent and important litigations, and it i is not only reprehensible, but indecent, that Judges who are to try such cases should receive favors which, at the very least, compromise their independence.
