As the photograph has superseded the oil-painting, because oi its exact reproduction of the subject, so this process is bound to take the place of steel eugraving, or any method which depends upon artistio oonception and execution for result?wo mean for the production of portraits. What the people waut in a portrait is truth ?they do not wish the artist's conception of a man, but the face and features of the inan as he is?and by no means can this grand result be better attained than by the means of photography, and this new process based thereon. But while these great advantages are secured, it admits of the embellishments of art, and a portrait is produced possessing all the truthfulness of a photograph, with the artistio effect of the steel engraving. The puMfchers have been extremely fortunate in their selection of the mode by which they give to all admirers of the great statesman the noble, generous, manly features, which speak so plainly the gieat mind, elevated feeling, and generous heart of Wnde Hampton. Those who worked for the grand cause, "Hampton and Home Rule," who have paid taxes to the government of their choice, can now place this picture at their firesides, as they have placed its sutyeel in their hearts. It must become one of the "Pcnatos" of South Carolina. No Tar is used in this Composition, therefore, it neither cracks in Winter, nor runs in Summer. On decayed shingles, it fills up the holes and pores, and gives a new substantial roof that will last for years. Curlku or wabveii shingles it brings to their places, and keeps them there.? It fills up all holes in felt roofs, stops the leaks ?and although n slow dryer, rain docs not affect it a few hours after applying. As nearly all paints that are black contains tar, be sure you obtain our genuine article, which (for sliiugle roofs) is CHOCOLATE COLOR, when first applied, changing in about a month to a uniform slate color, and is, to all intents and purposes slate. On TIN ROOFS our red color is usually preferred, as one coat it equal to five of any ordinary pnint. For BRICK WALLS our bright rf.ii is the only reliable Slate Paint ever introduced thnt will effectually prevent dampness from penetrating and discoloring the plaster.
