S. C. We con grutulnte these gentltmen on the grand success they have made of so noble a subject. As a work of urt it stands unrivalled, Out still its chief merit lays in its being a life-like portrait. It is the first product, on so large a scale, of a new and secret process based on photography, having t he ail vantage of great truthfulness. As the photograph has superseded the oil-painting, because ot its exact reproduction of the subject, so this process is bound to take the place of steel uviiig, or any iiit-iiiua which uepcuus upon artistic conception and execution for result?we mean for the production of portraits. Wli.it the people want in a portrait is truth ? they do not wish the artist's conception of a man, but the face and features of the mail is he is?and by no means can this grand result be better attained than by the means of photography, and this new process based thereon. lJut while these great advantages are secured, it admits of the embellishments of art, and a portrait is produced possessing all the truthfulness of a photograph, with the artistic effect of the steel engraving. The puMehcrs have been extremely fortunate in their selection of the mode by which they give to all admirers of the great statesman the noble, generous, manly features, which speak so plainly the gieat mind, elevated feeling, and generous heart of Wade Hampton.
