L?ue notice will be given to tlio citizens of eaclt county of the appoiutmcut of some proper agent for the collection of the contribution herts called for. The resolutions of the W-- 1 louse of Representatives authorize a call for twenty-live per cent, of last year's taxes, but all immediate wants of the legitimate government of the 8tate can bo supplied, if the people will respond geuerally to the call here made for ten tier cent. William 15ut!c:\ who, as a whig, at one time repr? settled the Greenville dial tact in congress. l!c is a nephew of Governor l'ierce M. Duller, who on the bloody-field of Cherubusco, 1847, tell at the head of '-the l'aliuetto regiment." lie is also a nephew of Judge A. 1'. Duller, who between 1810 and 1857, acceptably represented South Carolina in the Senate of the United States.? Attd on his mother's side ho is a grandsou or nephew of Commodore O. 14. I'crry, who in 181D defeated the Dritisli in the fatuous naval engagement on Lake Erie. General Duller was graduated tit the South Carolina college, and became a member of the legislature in 1800. lie entered the war as a captain of cavalry, in the Hampton legion, uis tiuguished himself repeatedly, lost a leg and emerged a major-general. After the war lie was one of the first to enter the field political and take the bull of reconstruction by the horns, running for the office of lieutenant-governor on the coalition iii-V-?i uiili Judge Carpenter. This year he was an early advocate of the "straight-out', movement, as the sole hope of arousing the people and saving the State.? Early in July he nominated General Hampton for governor in the columns of the Journal of Commerce, which earnestly supported this policy and the nomination. !r> tho slate convention of the democratic party, August 10, he was intlucntial in establishing this programme and afterwards labored for its sucecss in the state. General Itutlcr is uotcd for his courageous manhood, tine appearance and address and personal magnetism. In dealing with men he has tact and skill, and iu public debate his ability is universally recognized, lie is a matt of a genuine and generous patriotism, and, we believe, will do the state some service aud make his mark in tlie counsels of the country.?Journal of Commerce.
