The Sumter Watchman. "^WEDNESDAY; DEC. ff gTTpAXTON . - BUSINESS MANAS?R Ifr The length of the Sheriff s Salen (now published officially in the Watch man) crowd out our editorials, and other matters, to which we will give place next week. _ gST The atteotioo of oar agftrfulturel readers is particularly directed to the notice addressed to then by Messrs. WILSON & SELBY, of Baltimore, and priuted oo another column. 5g^, The column advertisement, or the Planters' Warehouse, with ita enu? meration of good things for Christmas, wil! be sure to catch the eye of the readers of this issue. .gr Maj* J. W* DARGAN has eompli merited UB with a monster Turnip, of j the Golden Ball variety-5 lbs. 5 os. It [ i-oot only a monster but a beauty. Tbe seed was obtained at Dr. China's Drug Store. Bond in -*ad Condition. The public road at DeSohamps' (late White's) mill, we have been informed, ia ie very bad condition. The attention of the County Commissioners is respect? fully called thereto. . taa > ?A Beraarkable Boy Meeaaatale.** This is tbe heading given by the Scientific American of Nor. 25, to a paragraph highly complimentary of our yooog iriend CHAS. T. MASON, Jr. The allusion is to a working model of a b-riaontal steam engine, with tubular boiler, sad of the locomotivo type, coo* grated ia 1869, when the ''remarkable boy mecbaoic" was but fourteen years of age. We shall take pleasure io publish? ?og the remarks alluded to io tiur next issue. Dramatic Ferfofrananeefc. Mrs. 0. H. MOSES gives notice that OD Wednesday, 27th inst., she will give the first of a scries of Theatrical En? tertain ru en ts for the benefit of the Ladies' Monumental Association of S om ter. We make no doubt that, as amateur performances, a high grade of merit will characterise them. Ssmter has taleot of this sort, that has met high compliment io the past, from cultivated lovers of the drama. And on the occa? sions referred to, it will doubtless be greeted by flowing bouses. Sumter 2Hoa timen lal Aaaoelaiioa. The communication of Mrs. OCTAVIA H. .MOSES, and that addressed to her by K W. .MOISE, Er-q., printed in this issae. will be found to contain matters of interest to the Ladies' Monumental Association of Sumter. Mr?. MOSES, the President, invites a meeting on Friday, the 29th inst., with the view of selecting a design of the Monument to be erected. We hope the numbers in attendance upon this meet? ing will remove all cause for complaint sich as that contained ta ber commuai tion. The information communicated by Mr. MOISE shows that there is now no longer cause for delay, from monetary difficulties, and we earnestly urge that the work be commenced at once. His liberality, too, will be appreciated, aud should incite others to further assistance, that we may build a Monument worthy the ooble dead of Sumter. Klug.' Hoaatala in ll Ita ry Se hool. We beg to direct particular attention to the notice of this excellent School, printed on another eoumo. A private note from Col. A. Coward, the accom? plished Principal and Proprietor, in? forms us that tho coodition of public affairs ic York County bas not in the slightest degree affected the management and operation of the School. The pu? pils are kept so entirely aloof from all local excitements, by the situation and discipline of the Institution, that they are probably safer there than they would be at their own homes. It will be sceo that the first session. the next scholastic year will open 10 February and cloee in June. Seater Matriel Sar ?IT ora? Association.
