to call aitontion to it only because, in
our opinion, justice to the memory pf
the great Confederate captain requires
that the motives whioh prevailed with
him to withdraw his allegiance from the
North und teodor it to the South, furn
ishes the true key to 'bis character.
There was . magnanimity even in the
choice which .constituted him a rebel
His political judgment, formed io early
days, pronounced loyal ty to be due to
the State before it was due to the Union.
Nearly.every motive but simple duty
which could have swayed such a mind
as Robert E. Lee's, must havo drawn
him .towards the North-or, rather,
towards.that F?deral Republic whioh
the .North' presented. His father had
been a soldier in its service, and,
through him, he was v connected with
tito immortal Washington. Robert, too.
had received - his military education
from the Union, and had "eaten its
.alt."
He had not to complain of neglect or
of mistrust. His worth bad been rccog
nized-his promotion promised to be
rapid as well as sure. But, when the
session of Virginia had been affected,
and war was hovering along the ,-border
of tho State, in his anxious -effort to
discover his own path ol duty, he stern
ly suppressed very personal inclination,
and calmly surrendered his individual
views and feelings at the demand - of
public duty. Virginia, he believed,
was entitled to claim him as her own.
and Virginia's claim should bo satisfied.
She might have aoted unadvisedly.
She might havo'b?en foolish in throw
ing her weight into the eoalo of a very
questionable cause. But her decision
haying been made, it was not for him to
ohallenge it-not for him even to
choose. With true soldiery obedience
ho held himself ready to take his State's
commands, and though they might
wring his heart to execute them.
. We just now observed, that tbo key
to this great and good man's obaraoter
might be found at this turning point of
bis career. To do "tho right" when his
judgment, duly.exercised, had satisfied
him as to what* was the right-no mat?
ter with what prospects, no matter at
what cost to himself-to merge his will
in the Will thut had tho clearest title to
command-this was tho life germ ol
General Lee's character. He 'had no
low ambition. He cared not to please
men: nor was love-of approbation any
weakness of his Still less did ho seek
or value ease or self-indulgence in any
of its forms. He trampled upon his
very prido when it stood io' the way of
true service. .Strength of will in him
and io the adverse circumstances it
was indoinitablo-rested not so r?uch OD
physical constitution as upon moral
considerations.
But that strang was soRom cvokod,
save to t he bidding of. a-ca Im, and del?b?
rate judgment, and showed itself qoite
ns conspicuously in hi? kindness as in
his ie v er tty. ? He believed - that, it was
right for him to share li? hardships of
' bis mon, and ho did so wi?h cheerful
and un often tat iou* pertinacity through,
ont tbo wat,, maintaining to the1. end a
Spartan simplioity. Tho man's whole
soul lived, not so much io his profession
as in the responsibilities whi?h it im?
posed on hiny* These he wielded with
all a lover's devotion, and wat eh ed, and
heeded, and obeyed them, with martial
steadiness and sobriety. His impulses
Weirs tender as a woman's; his inflexi?

He died of congestion of the brain.
In death, as in life, his Christian cha?

Much of what Macaulay, fa his review
of Milton, wrote of tho Puritans of the
seventh: century, was true of Lee-a
descendant, however, from a Cavalier
family--"The intensity of their feelings
on one subject made them tranquil on
every other. One overpowering senti
ment had subjected to itself pity, and'
hatred, ambition and fear. Death had
lost ita terrors and pleasure its oherms.
They had their smites and their
raptures and their sorrows* but not for
the things of this world."
A TOUCHING SttKNB. -
Julius vou Wickede, tho noted Ger?
man military writer, desoribes the
following soene, which occurred after
tho capitulation of Sedan :
"It was a touch mg scope," said he,
"to see a fine looking officer of. the
Chasseurs d'Afrique take leave of a
splendid bay horse, with a black mane,
a fine, full blooded Arabian. He literally
embraced the noble steed, patted its
bsek.and caressed it, giving it all 'sorts
of aflcci iona te names. The -intelligent
animal seemed to comprehend bis
roaster, and pressed its head against his
breast in a caressing man nor, as Oriental
horses are wont to do Suddenly the
officer stepped back, and a terrible
struggle scorned to take place io his
breast. He held his hand to his eyes,
and then he tore his sword from its
scabbard, plunged it into the breast of
his noble oharger, pieroing its heart.
He had aimed well, for the noble horse
fell dead without a struggle. Now the
officer turned away sobbing like a child,
without bestowing a look 00 the 'saddle
and the trappiogs, and joined his com?
panions, who were mounting into the
railway cars, whioh took them to their
place of captivity."
