VVmtooo^^ One of tbe best eitlseus of Sumter recently pened throDgh the Val? that separates' os from tbs spirit land, and has gone to waar bis im? mortal crown ol heavenly reward. We utter no word of compliment, inspired by yesrs of strong personal esto JIU and lova, when we ?"ito to bis memory "ode of Sumter's best citiseni." Our departed friend was known of all the community in tbis character, and loved by all, wbite and blaok--tho large number of color? ed people In attendance upon his funeral services attesting the fact that he held a warm plaee in their affections. Som? of these, too, more prom ioiDt, followed the hearse to the plaee of burial? sod sought and performed service in the last sad duty and respect discharged by his friends. MR. WATSON was one of the piliers of the Bap? tist Church at this place, and had been as a pol? ished shaft in tho earthly temple of the Most High for many years. II o loved Ute church .and all of ber services with a steady and unvarying ardor, and in bis liberal heart devised g?nerons things in her support. To the donominntlon to whioh bo belonged, and to our obrletlan com? munity, his death involves a sad loss. For several years ho waa one of tho loading pariaors ot the enterprising .mercantile house of OREEN, WATSON A WALSB, and to his energy and industry and well directed effort was due mach of the large success attained by that bouse, and Iii? beneficial results accruing to our town as a business mart. Bis health had been feeble for many years, rendering it necessary for him to scok.tho invig? orating climate and restorative waters of the mountain regions of North and South Carolina. Ho returned to bis homo after an absonco during the summer months, to die in tho bosom of bis deeply devoted family, and in the midst of his Urge circlo of sympathising friends. Wo mourn him as a departed friend, but wo know that he has gone to a shining seat in tho blissful courts of the heavenly Paradise, and we take comfort, while extending to his afflicted family our deepost sympathies. HellKlona. Wo take pleasure in making announcement, that Bishop T. F. DAVIS, of the Episcopal Church, will hold religious services at the Church of the Holy Comforter, at Sumter, on Sabbath morning next, at the usual hour. ?-&~ Wo call attention to the Ordinance in re gard to the sale of Country produoo in town after dark. Intendent, Capt. OREEN commenced the seising of Seed Cotton ajs> tho early part of last week and now that (ratio hus entirely stopped iu our town at night. This will be welcome news to our planting frionds. Capt. OREEN deserves tbe thanks of all honest men. Direct from JLOUIMVII lc to Humicr. We learn that Messrs. GREEN A WAI.HU re? ceived, on Monday lust, o car load of flour, through dlrcot from Louisville-the first for this placo by the great Western froigbt line recently established. Mr. J. T. SOLOMONS, we also loam, received twenty barrels ol flour by the same shipment. - -4.?a?.?- ? Road Work. Wo direct attention to the notice to roadwork defaulters, by tho board of County Commission? ers, on another column. The law authorizes tho Board to call out all able bodied men to work tbe roads, and in case of rofusal or negleot; to impose and collect floes. We learn that it is the purpose of the Board to proceed to executo the law, and we thcreforo diroot the at? tention of all interested to tho matter. Vine Clgara. Messrs. NASH A DULIN have laid on our table a bundle of Cigars, tho very odor of wbiob, before '.to fire ls applied and tho smoke curls, is exhilarating. Thoy aro of the higher and finer brands, and gentlemen whoso ?testa is moro suo ceisfully woeod or pleasurably succeeded by tbe inspiration ot tho finer Spanish weed, should give thom a trial. Urocerlea. Mr. F. W. KERCIINEII, of Wilmington, adver? tises various articles in the Grocery line, in largo quantities. His establishment is ono of the most attractive placea of that city, to all people there, wben in pursuit of something to comfort the in norman. Adrian dc Vollere. These gentlemen keep up a large stook of Gro? ceries, In groat variety, and also keep up, mean? while, a systoni of advertising by which tho fact is mude known to tho world at large. The result is, they biivo a largo and increasing business. The attention of grocery buyers is directed to their advertisement. Black Seed Oat?. Mr. J. D. MATH KI HON, of Augusta, Geo., of? fers a cargo of tho celebrated Black oeod Oula for salo, as will bo soen by rcforonco to our adverti? sing columns. The Augusta market now sootns to be drawing nearer to tho people of this soo lion of Carolina ; and nearer still, ns the noblo body of workmon employed open up thc way for the track of tho Wilmington, Columbia and Au? gusta line. The Editor He-Seated Wo oro groatly iudebtcd to Mr. J. D. CnAio and bis very efficient nnd worthy employee, Mr. B. T. BARFIKMI, for tho vory kind and liboral act involved lo re scating the editorial chairs ol Ibo Watchman, Tho work ia handsomely dono, >Q tho stylo k nown ns onrto-oo-alod, and tho editor .gain write? from an easy and comfortable chair, to ' j nothing of the bountiful polish imparted, making tho whole thing look as though lt had jost come, originally, from the hands of the skill? ful Workman.
