At a large publie meeting held here thia day by the oitizeue of thia commu? nity, both white and colored, F. JOYE, Esq., in the chair, and Dr. J. M. SAN* DERB aoting as Secretary, the following pledge was unanimously adopted, and signed by scores on the spot, both white and colored, via : We, the undersigned,'pledge our hon? or that we will henceforth purchase no seed cotton or other produce whioh we believe to have been stolen ; and furth? er, that where suoh produce is brought to us for sale or barter, we will re? quire that the same shall be accom? panied by a certificate from some credi? table source, setting forth that said produoe is, iu good faith, the property of the seller ; such certificate to be filed by the purchaser for public inspootion. And we further pledge, in like manner, that we will purchase no produoe after dark. The meeting was notablo for the pre* valence of harmony, good will and una? nimity of sentiment. All who aro cogni? zant of the great amount of wrong and mischief resulting from the indiscrimi? nate trafilo in seed cotton and other pro* duco-a traffic too much abused in most planting communities-will bo pleased to see the wholesome example here set. The "certificate" featuro was inserted in the pledge at the motton o? Mr. It. S. MOORE, one of our strongest handed mer* ohants and cotton dealers ; the "other produce" clause at the suggestion of Mr. BRYANT WRIGHT, a respectable colored farmer. Before adjournment a resolution was adopted, requesting the Secretary to engross the essential portions of the proceedings of the meeting, and to fur? nish a copy of the same to the publish? ers of the District papers, and also to the Daily Republican and the Missionary Record, of Charleston, for f publication. THE SECRETARY. Ji?y- Our friend, of the Lancaster Ledger speaks thus of his financial griefs : "WHAT THEY SAY.--One day last week a man stepped up to us and said he would pay us every cent he owed if be lived till Saturday night. Wo pre? sume that man died. Another said he would pay us?in a day or two, as sure as we were born. Did tho man make a mis? take, or wore we ever born ? Another said he would settle his bill as sure as shooting. We are lcd to tho conclusion that shooting is deoidedly uncertain. Another said bo hoped to go on a visit to his Satanic Majesty, if he didn't pay us in three days. Haven't seen him since, but we trust he hos hoped in vain. Quite a number said they would see to-morrow. These men have been blind every day sinoe, or else to morrow has never come. Ono man told us ?ix months ago that he would pay us as soon as he got some money. ?That man would not tell an untruth, and of course, has not had a cent since. PAIR OP 18TO. MR. The test yester? day was very satisfactory, and the opin? ion was expressed by those preseut that one of the smallest sized machines and two men would do the work of thirty expert bends. A company called the Southern Cotton Pioking Company ' hot? been formed, and -the manufacture of the machines will be carried on extensively. It is estimated that the machines will cost from 9400 to $1000 according to size. The rights of vurious districts in Arkansas, Louisiana, Ala? bama and other States, havo already been disposed of, although the machine was only patented last month. The machine is very simple in construction, 1 and is destined to work a great r?volu tion in the labor system of the South. THIA I. JUSTICES CANNOT SUN? TU NC li CnilfllNALS* A trial justice in Williamsburg coun? ty recently sentenced a man whom he had found guilty of assault and battery. A writ of prohibition, forbidding tho enforcement of the sentence, was moved for before Judge Green, on the ground that trial justices have no constitutional jurisdiction over such cases. The judge decided that tho not giving jurisdiction in such matters to trial justices is a violation of the constitution, and ordered the sentence to be set aside. It follows that the only power possessed by trial justices in criminal cases is to examiue prisoners, and, if sufficient cause appears, to bind them over for trial in the Court of Common Picas. A BOY WHO IS HIS OWN GRAND FATHBII? Ata school in Norwich, there is a boy who is really his own grandfather. How is it possible ? tho reader will ask. I will explain it. A widow, who had a son, married at tho same time with hen daughter in law. The latter married the husband's father of her mother-in-law. In conse? quence of that, tho widow was thc father's mother of her husband, that is, her grandmother.
