Io spite of all the phases of influences
which have been brought to bear against
it, the meeting, to-day, will ba large
aod influential. The whites will be out
ia force, and there will be a large rep?
resentation of our oolored people, tnaoy
of the latter coaling with an earnest
purpose to hear and learn. Aod we
doubt not good impressions will be
made upou their minds.
In DO case has a Radical meeting in
Sumter been disturbed, or the speakers
intetrupted by those differing from
them. The most obnoxious of their
speakers have, time and again, said
what they pleased, and delivered most
offensive and insulting speeches without
molestation iu any way.
We claim the same right for the
Union Reform speakers to-day. There
will be no disturbance, or attempt at
disturbance, on the part of the Reform?
ers; and, in advance, we notify the
Radical leaders to this effect. We in?
tend to put this matter beyond doubt.
We understand the oolored militia is
to be out to day ; and we have it from
trust-wort hy sources, that the Captain
here has ordered the men to carry so
many rounds of ammunition. We can?
not seo the necessity for this. No one
is disposed to interfere with the right
of the colored man to vote-no one, on
the Reform side, expects a difficulty, or
will countenance any who deport them?
selves in a manner calculated to pro?
duoe a disturbance. The meeting means
peace and order-free speech and fair
play, and nothing more ; and this it in?
tends to have.

Capt. Tupper, and Messrs. Moroso and
Leo, of the Courier and News, arrived
yesterday, and were properly received at
the depot. Gen. Kershaw will arrive to
day.

Thc sad news of this death reached
our town on Sunday morning last, buy?

This estimable lady was well known
and greatly beloved, in this immediate
community, whero she resided up to tho
time of her marriage with Mr. JAMES
G. MCINTOSH. She was the sister of
our much beloved friend and fellow
citizen, D. J. WINN. Our sympathies,
as well as those of a large circle of friends
aro warmly extended to the nilli ct ed re?
latives of the deceased lady.
DOUBTFUL CHARACTER.
A person, calling himself Dr. G. N.
LEVISON, applied, on Monday last, to
tho Master of one of our Masonic
Lodges for assistance. Whilst tho
necessary arrangements were being
made for protection against imposition,
and for extending the assistance sought,
the party disappeared, making his way
off on foot on the Railroad track iu the
direction of Kingsville. The Wil
mington Star of Aug. 24, makes un?
favorable mention of a visit of the same
person to that city, in the capacity of
a lecturer. Our exchanges at Columbia
and j Augusta would do tho Masonic
Fraternity service by mentioning these
facts.
