A lotter from a prominent oitizen of Providence, informe us that arrange? ments have been made for a large meeting iu the interests of the Union aud Reform movement at that place, on Saturday next. The letter says that a great chango has taken place in that section, aud that the people are moving with spirit. Let other sections of the county move promptly. FIRST NEW COTTON AT SUMTER. Thc first bale of now cotton was brought to Sumter on Monday last, by Mr. C. C. MYERS, son of our esteemed fellow citizen JOSHUA MYERS, of Pro? vidence. After spirited bidding, it was bought by Messrs. GREEN & WALSH at 22 ccu ts. This is the third year that Mr. MYERS has brought the first bale of I new cottou to market. PREIGIIT ^t EDUCED. Wc beg to direct the attention of all interested to the reduoed rates of freight to and from Charleston, as advertised by Mr. S. S. SUMTER, S. C., August 18 1870. Tho annual meeting of the Stookhodl ers of the South Carolina Central Rail Road Company, was held this day. A majority ot the Stocks being re? presented tho meeting prooeeded to business. On motion of Mr. JAMBS M. CARSON, Col. JAMES D. BLANDINQ was called to the Cbair, and WM. H. PERONNEAU, appoioted Secretary. The reports of tho President and Treasurer, were read and received as information. A number of our farmers and planters have told us that they intend to give the day (Aug 81st) to the colored people, und furnish thom transportation to the Mass Meeting at Sumter. We urge this course generally. FATAL ?CUL IN SAVANNAH. Tho usual quiet of the'city yesterday was seriously disturbed by tho announce? ment that a duel had beon fought in the vicinity of the city, at 7 o'clock a. m. between two well known gentlemen. It I was not until a later hour, half past' ten, that tho affair was fully mado known by the fact one of the principles, Mr. Ludlow Cohen, was brought to the oily, and to his residence, wounded fatally in the encounter. The principals to this fatal affair were Captain Riohard F. Aiken, a gentleman well known in tho community, and Mr. Ludlow Cohen, a merchant of the city equally well known, and both of them highly esteemed and respected. We are unable to state tho causes leading to this "code," except from universal re< port, which bases the difficulty upon a private quarrel between the two gent?o* men named, which oould not, it seems, be adjusted without a resort to the field. ' The gage of the battle wai thrown down by Mr. Aiken and readily aooepted by Mr. Cohen.
