In this oonneotion, we take occasion
to say that we are pleased to learn from
Mr. WHITE that the importanoe of |

Mr. C. C. MYERS, son of our esteemed

bought by Messrs. GREEN & WALSH at j

Mr. MYERS has brought the first bale of j

FREIGUT REDUCED.
We beg to direct the attention of all
interested to the reduoed rates of freight
to and from Charleston, as advertised by
Mr. S. S. SOLOMONS, Superintendent
of thc the North Eastern Rail Road, on
another column. In ordor to reach these
low rates, Mr. SOLOMONS carries the
freight over his otvu Road at nominal
figures. It brings down tho expense
to about a fair charge, wcro there but
one road traversed, and renders the
? Charleston market accessible to our poo
I pie.

TO BB AVOIDED.
When speakers on both sides alternate
addresses to a mixed orowd, it tends to
disorder* When one side ia evidently
getting the best of the argument, the
other is tempted to quash proceedings
with a riot. Henoe tho Scott ring re?
sorted to bricks at Chester, whon they
were getting the worst of the debate.
Let each side hold its own meetings,
and address the aaaie people at different
times. A mixed programme must lead
to trouble and ehould be avoided. The
Union Reform wants order and honesty.
The Soottites evidently prefer the oppo?
site.

j FATAL DUEL IN SAVANNABL
The usual quiet of the *clty y cs ter da;
was seriously disturbed by tho announce
ment that a duel had beon fought in tin
vicinity of the city, at 7 o'clock a. tv
betweon two well known gentlemen. I
was not until a later hour, half pas

by the fact one of the principles, Mi
Ludlow Cohen, was 6rought to the city
and to his residence, wounded fatally ii
the encounter.
Tho principals to this fatal affair wer
Captain Riobard F. Aiken, a gentlema
well known in tho community, and Mi
Ludlow Cohen, a merohaut of the oit
equally well known, and both of thei
highly esteemed and rospeotod. We ar
unable to state tho causes leading t
this "code," except from universal rc
port, whioh bases the difficulty upon
private quarrel between the two gentle
men named, which oould not, it seemi
be adjusted without a resort to tb

The gage of the battlo was throw

SINKING SLOWLY.
Diseaaea that progress rapidly to a cristo are I
not the only onea to bo dreaded. Canker or dry
rot does not bleat a troo as auddenly aa a stroke
of lightning, but unleas arreated, it destroys it I
aa certainly ; and in like manner ohroniw debility
although it does not kill with the swiftness of I
yollow fever, ia aa aure to aap the springs of life 1
eventually aa any aeute disease, if not chcoked
by invigorating medication. There is something 1
inexpressibly touching in the apootuole of prema?
ture decay. Languor, pallor, emaciation, depres?
sion of spirits, and a distaste for oxertion, are its
ordinary aymptoma, and they ahould be promptly
met by tonio treatment. The beat invigorant and
exbilarant that oan be adminiaterod in a oaae of
this kind ia Hoatettor'a Stomach Bittora. The
stimulating prinoiplo of the preparation rouses
the dormant .energies of the ayatom, and the
strengthening and regulating proportiea give
permanent and healthful impulso to the vital
forces thus brought into play. Tho failing appe?
tite is re awakened, the process of digestion and
assimilation aro quickened, the qunlity of the
blood ia improved, the secretions become moro
I natural, and every organ that contributes to tho |
I nooriahment of the body undergoes salutary
change. By theso moana tho repair of tho phy s
ioal struoture is effootod and Its boaltb and vigor j
rostorcd. In no olass of diseases baa the bon ?fl
cent operation of the Bitters been more marked
and atriklng than in thora characterized by gen
oral debility and norvoua prostration. Ladies
affected with these alimenta find in' this most |
wholesome of all tonios and correctives the saf?
est and surest moana of reliof. It ia strong to
restore and powerless to injure Such is the
uniform testimony of olouds of witnesses.1
