The Sumter watchman. (Sumterville, S.C.) 1855-1881, August 10, 1870, Image 4
JU saan walkt ?root, beari og upon his
?rontleta the. eignet of duly, himself, ia
the noblest and meet comma ndi og, ad
woman ia th? moat beautiful and attraot
ire of being the terrestrial upireme.
Ip all the ifirriog seines of fife, woman
is th fi most nervously sensitive; when
Joy. in vites, the first to smile ; when
sorrow coules, tb? first to weep; and th?
trite but true sating, that ?be was- last
ak tho oross-?nd first at the sepulchre,
is bot au exemplification of har charac?
ter. Woman is the first to befriend, and
the lasttofbrBake,euibellishing the path
way of life bj her presence and irradi?t
ing the darkness of the world, she ts
the only real support and true consola?
tion ot the rougher aex in the perplex?
ing earea and onerous responsibilities'
of existence. She is the soul of delicate
sensibility, the embodiment of cultiv?t"
ed grace, the essence of adivine char?
ity ; grace in all her movements, Heaven
in her eye, and all her geaturos dignity
and love. Uer mission is a sublime and
peculiar one. She is not expected nor
was it the object of ber creation lo
govern empires as Semiramiu, or to com
maud armies, like Joan of Arc, but her
mission ia accomplished in the peaceful
and quiet walka of private and domestic
life, where, veiled from the disturbing
elements of National strife, and pro?
tected from the ruder drudgery of la
borioua Hie, by her sterner companion,
she disseminates those enuobling virtue
of kindness, forbearanoe, and Christian
charity, that everywhere adorn and
beautify society.
lier's is the work of moulding the
plastic materials of youth und iufanoy
into proportions of form and beauty.
The canvass has occasionally glowed
with the touches of her penoil and brush,
and tho "marble been made to speak"
with her chisel and genius, yet her mis*
siou is not to work upon wood or marble,
but upon the mind. She seizes it in thc
first dawnings of intelligence and reason
and infuses into it its first knowledge of
things, and its first impressions of beau?
ty. She gives by ber teachings and
her assiduous attention and kindness
tho impress of future character, intel?
lectually, and morally. She dovolopcs
and fashions the individual man, and
thus controls, regulates and governs the.
world, by a power behind tho throne
greater than the throne itself. She is
the partner ot man, dividing his Borrows
aud heightening his joys, dinging to
him as the forest vine entwines the
sturdy oak, in prosperity, and drooping
over him tenderly as the weeping wil?
low in his afflictions, spreading flowers,
and dispersing gloom all along tho jour?
ney of mortal life, aud smoothing ut
lust the pillow of death. She is the di
vine Peri, the guarinn angel of this
world, that shields from thc harm and
hardness of life, and finally opens tho
gates of paradise, bearing in her sacred
palms the consecrated tear of penitence.
NEW VEGETABLE FIBRES.
Among the recently-discovered vege?
table fibres, useful in the manufacture
of cloth of various kinds, may be men
- liooed those of the China grass and the
Ramie, both of them species belonging
to the nettle family and to thc genna
Boehmeria. Tho China gi ass, when
prepared, is of a brilliant snow-white
oolor, and of a remarkable fineness of
fibre. Like thc fibres of cotton, those
of the China grass are single cells, some
of which attain a length of eight inches,
those of flax being at most only four.
The Ramie is of still greater value in
the arts, and is now extensively cultiva?
ted in the warmer portions of the Uni?
ted States, principally from seeds distri?
buted by the Agricultural Department.
This plant has been grown from time
immemorial by the native of the Indian
Archipelago, and from the peculiarly
waterproof nature of its fibres is used
largely in the manufacture of nets. The
plant is perennial and easily propagated
by settings, yielding throe or four har?
vests annually. The crop is about a
thousand pounds fibre per aero, of which
about half is textile material, furnish?
ing a silky, lustrous thread ; longer
than that of cotton. This is spun,
mixed with either wool or eotton, and
can indeed be worked by itself, in which
case it has the appearance of Lyons
silk.
- There is, perhaps, no fruit more
useful and more wholesome than the
apple. Every housekeeper should lay
ia a good supply of apples, as it is thc
most economical investment in thc
whole range of oulinarirs. A raw,
mellow apple is digested in an hour und
a half. - A more healthy desert cannot
bo placed on tho table than baked
apples If eaten at breakfast, with
coarse bread and butter, they havo a
good effect on tho general system.
TnE Pennsylvania State Teachers'
Association will hold its annual con?
vention at Lancaster. Tho session will
extend from the Oih to the 12th proxi?
mo. These State reunions are always
occasions of social enjoyment and pro?
fession*!-profit. It is desirable that as
targe a proportion ot our educators
should be present as possible, to add to
qho valuo of the deliberations, to con
jributc suggestions to bo applied in prao
tioo, and to bo in turn toned up in zeal
bo become better instructors than ever
tofore.
- The pr?sent Pope of Roms ha?
entered upon the twenty fifth year of
his pontificate. During thc long series
of 269 popes, no one has oocupiel the
papal chair twentyfivo years. The
nearest approoch was that of Pius VI ,
who reigned twenty four years six
months and fourteen days.
- Addison says: "Though wo seem
grieved at the shortness of life iu
general, wc arc wishing every period of
it at an end. The minor longs to be ot
age, and thon to bo a man of business ;
then to take up an estate ; to attain to
honors,and then finally to retiro."
