MASS.MEETING.
JUDOS CARPENTER, GHN. M. C.
BUTLER, GEN. J. B, KZHSHAW
and probably other distinguish
ed speakers will [ address the
citizens of Sumter County, white
and colored, at Sumter on Wed?
nesday, Aug. 81st. The people,
en masse, will no doubt turn out.
DEATH OF Ma. THOMAS MON A?
. ?HAW.
An un usual ly large assemblage of]
our citizens, of every .olaae, faith, col?
or and party, were assembled at the
Catholic Chureh at thia place, on Sat?
urday last, to join in paying respect to
tbe character and remains of Mr. THOM*
AS MONAGHAN, who breathed his last
the day previous. We were impressed
with the idea that all distinctions and
differences of sentiment, thought, action
and faith, are and should be, laid aside
in the preBonoo of the Qreat King of
Terrors-when we oome to surround the
grave.
A noticeable ieaiure was the large
number of oolored people in attendance.
Mr. MONAGHAN was among the most
upright, quiet, retiring aud inoffensive
of our citizens, and hence was respeoted
by all clauses. His onergy and industry
and devotion to his business, were
marked, and these yielded for him an
honest livelihood for his family during
all the times of hardship and trial
through whioh the country has,passed.
Tho sympathies of the entire commu?
nity aro with his afflicted family.
YORK VILLE . FB1HALB COLLEGE.
Kev. Jas. Douglas, who is well known
and much beloved by many in this
section, is in oharge of this institution,
tho advertisement of whioh, as-it appears
on another column, particular attention
is directed to.
SIX E1BS FKOia ONS STALK.
Our young friend, SAMUEL M.
T?OMPSON, (Booz) son of Co). JESSE
THOMPSON, brought us, the other day,
six large and well filled ears of corn,
the product of a single stalk that grew
in "his patch." Unusually prolific, and
a smart and industrious boy, who merits
encouragement.
THE BANKRUPT ACT.
Tho bankrupt not bas been changed
by Congress, by the adoption of the
following amendment : "Be it enacted
by the Senate, and Houso of Represen,
tatives of the United States of Amerioa,
in Congress assembled, That the pro?
visions of tho second clause of the
thirty third section of an Act to estab?
lish a unilbm system of Bankruptcy
throughout the United States, as amend?
ed by the first section of an act in
amendment thereof, shall not apply to
those debts from which the bankrupt
seeks a discharge, whioh were con*
traded prior to the 1st of January,
18G9."
Previous to this amendment, no per?
son whose estate would not pay fifty
per oent. of his indebtedness, exclusivo
of his debts os surety, could, without the
consent of a majority of his creditors,
avail himself of the bankrupt aot. The
effect of this amendment is to make the
fifty per cent, .olause apply only to debts
contracted after the 1st of January, 1860.
Under the law as it now stands, any
person can apply for a release from all
his old debts, whether his estate pays
anything or not. He is only required
to pay, fifty per cent, of such of his
individual debts as were contracted sub?
sequent to January 1st, 1869.
WHAT DOES IT HEAN f
Mr. Editor :-My attention has been

WHAT THE COUNTRY OWES TO
