Festivities and dancing at a place devoted to the residence and treatment of the insane naturally suggest a curious incongruity to the majority of people, and yet these things form a regular j ea \, jure in the weekly programme of the . institution. These insane asylum balls are very interesting events and gener? t ally attract quite a large number ol spectators, considering tho distance ot the establishment from the city. Tho ' . assembly takes place io the amusement j hall, on the upper story of tho asylum, \ which is u large and handsome apart? ment. The number of patients partic? ipating io the festivities is generally from forty to sixty, and frequently more than tho latter figure. The ball room is brilliantly lighted, and with its lofty oeiling and tasteful adornments presents a highly pleasing spectacle. The music ia generally a piano and two violins, the musicians usually being Dr. Leffingwell, assistant physician, and one of tho attendants, and a patient who understands music excellently. Besides tho patients who directly participated in tho dancing, quite a large number aro entertained by watching the speotaolo of dancers. Thc usual plan is to arrange the sets so that half the number on the floor is composed of patients. Care is always taken to pren vent two insane people acting as part? ners. Visitors and the attendants join in tho dnncibg and form half the sets. Quadrilles and round dances are execu? ted, and the patients mingle in both with thc utmost spirit. Of course, as in every incident connected with asylum life, a constant watchfulues has to bc kept over the patients, but rarely if over, does anything occur to disturb the harmony of the proceedings. Vis? itors aro frequently astonished at the order and decor um pre. erv ed, and find it difficult to realize that more than one half of those present belong to that un? fortunate class cursed by the blight of mental aberration. The spectacle of the hall as thc dance is iu progress, has, moreover some curious features, which remind a thoughtful spectator that there is something peculiar about the nssembly whioh otherwise looks like any other festival gathering. Tho harmonious music of many voices which usually characterizes a dancing party is absent. Mad people, as a general thing, are not talkative, except in a broken incoherent manner, and when a number of them are together, und when some un? usual excitement prevails. The com? parativo silence where ono expects nat? urally the sound of human voices in conversation aud laughter, is one ol' thc most promineut characteristics. When amused and interested, the insane pa? tients have a tendency to more freedom of speech j but still thc absence of the usual hum of voices strikes a spectator at once when he first glances on the mad people's ball. They do talk and laugh to a certain extent, but the prcvailiug sound'when the musio ceases hus an outro element in it, aud is different in quality ns well as quantity from the usual accompaniment of a ball room. The patients are all neatly dressed and in deportment there was nothing observable to which the most fastidious could objeot. An examination of thc faces of tho crazy folks as they are par? ticipating in amusements of this sort, it a most interesting study. Once thor oughly interested, and they lose more than half that peculiar expression which in thc majority of cases charac? terizes insanity. In tho perversion of intellect they may not be ablo to un. derstnnd tho cxaot meaning of words addressed to them, but tho simple pro? gramme of au evening's pleasure as skillfully devised now in our public institutions, appeals to them iu a dif? ferent woy. The light, cheerful music soothes them, and the animation mound awakes their interest, while the example of others exercise ils influence Then in many cases, the patients previous tu thc derangement, of their reasons un? derstood dancing,' and the scene re? calls dimly visions and scenes of thc past. It was, in fact, as if one were looking "through a gloss darkly," for insanity is oftener obscurity of mental visions ns to tho relation ot things than n muro disorder of faculties or one crowning hallucination. Again, hero might be seen a young girl, so evidently pleased with her surroundings that she could not help but laugh gleefully now and then, becoming almost sane in tho nat? uralness of her feelings.
