RAIN.
The work of the farm and plantation
has been much retarded, of late, by
continued, and almost every-day rains
The grass, in some places, as a ?csult,
has serious hold Upon the crop. We
have heard of cotton being plowed up,
uud the land put in oom, in the hope?
lessness of tho prospect bf successful
cultivation of tho for iii or. The crop,
gonerally, docs not promise Well now,
aud should the remainder of tho season
prove un favorable, tho aggregate product
of thc staple in this section, will not
equal tho crop of last yoar, notwith?
standing thc aroa of land in cultivation
is larger.
The corn crop is promising, but gen?
eral apprehension prevails of a drought
in July, which would prove disastrous,
following the presont wet season.
KOHLRABI.
Our esteemed and courteous friend, C.
If. MOISE, of the Planters' Warehouse,
left at our office, yesterday morning, a
specimen of the singular variety of vege?
table known as "Kohlrabi," or tur?
nip cabbage, grown in his garden at
this placo. The leaves indicate a cross
(?) between tho turnip abd oabbage, and
the "head," so called, from which the
leaves spring, is about the size of an
ordinary turnip. When "tabled," we
can form a better opinion of its ed?
ibility.

HEARTU AND HOME.-This paper is
conducted with marked ability, and.
with its practical as woll as sentimental
and natural illustrations, and ita general
variety, is really an interesting publica?

healthful condition since the withdrawl
from it of Mrs. Harriet Becchor Stowe.

Accepting ibo kind invitation re?
ceived, we participated io thc very
ioterestiog exercise* at MayesvHle, OD
Friday last, atteodaut upon the laying
of the Corner Stone of the Lodge
Building projected bj May cz ville Lodge,
No, 141.
We regret that the limited space at
our command does not permit oe to give
such a report aa the occasion merits.
Members of Biehopvillc, Claremont
and Sumter Lodges were present io con?
siderable numbers, and the Masooio
procession, under the marsbalsbip of
Dr. J. W. HUDSON, was more imposing
than any we hare ever seen in this
seetioo. The assemblage too, of the
oitisens and fair ladies of that highly
intelligent and respectable and always
hospitable community, was large.
The ceremonies were conducted by
aoting Grand Master MONTGOMERY
MOSES, with Masooio beauty, solemnity
and impressiveness. Capt. JOHN S.
RICHARDSON, the chosen orator of tho
ocoasion, delivered one of his best
speeches, the musio, lead by Mr. II. D.
CORBETT, on the Melodeon, was* full of
inspiration, and the luxurious and abun?
dant di un cr, spread in the beautiful grove
adjacent to the residence of our venera?
ted friend, M. P. MAYES, Esq. as, we
must say, only Salem eau do suoh
things, put the whole company in fine
spirits. The occasion loaves behind it
pleasant recollections, and we beg to
express our warm appreciation of the
oourtesics received.

WESTERN METHODIST.-We are
muoh pleased to receive and add this
staunch Southorn Christian paper to our
exchange list. It is published at
Memphis, Tenn., and, until now, was
entitled the Memphis and Arkansas
Christian Advocate. The change of
name became necessary, among other
reasons, in consequence of the increase
in tho number of patronizing Conferen?
ces. It is now the special organ of tho
Memphis, North Mississippi, Arkansas,
White River, Little Rock and Indian
Mission Conferences. The Western
Methodist is printed with beautiful clear
type on a fine double sheet, and is con
ducted with decided talent, editorially.

AUGUSTA CHRONICLE AND SENTINEL
-This is among the most valuable cf
our Georgia exchanges. As a news
and commercial paper, it hus enterprise
aud reliability, and our merchants and
business men generally will find ii valu?
able-, especially as, under recently es?
tablished mail facilities, it would afford
them as late intelligence as could be
received through any other newspaper
medium, and as thero are now indications
of some trauo springing up between
Augusta and Sumter. We wero recent?
ly permitted to form the ncquuiutance
of some of tho Chronicle and Sentinel
staff, the remembrance of which is
among our pleasant recollections..
THE PRINTER-JOHN GREA?ON,

specimen of typography, or of the
printing art. Every page and every
line of it shines in the boauty of its
print.

BEAUTIFUL WOMEN.
All women know that it is beauty, rather than

then, that so much of woman's timo and atten?

fact, that tho world doos not prefer tho society
of an ugly woman of genius tu that of a boauty
of less intellectual acquirements. The world bas

be beautiful, nud it would seem that tho ladies of
