MR EDITOU :-The burning of our Academy, on last Wednesday, which produced such excitement in our quiet community, suggests a few thoughts, to which you will permit us to give utterance Thc engines were out in time, and worked with a will, and with a plenty of water at hand, would have saved (he body ol'thc building. This was the first fire since thc organization of the fire companies, and the firemen have reason to congratulate themselves, and the community to bc proud of them, upon their success in saving, under tho circumstances, a part of thc building Tho house was of pine, well seasoned, mostly lightwood, perfectly dry, the wind at the height of a gale, and with u very inadequate supply of water ; and what was doue, proves what may be done, under more favorable circum? stances. Tho experiment, sh _,ws, 1st, That wc need fire wells, of large dime? sionfi, all over our town. This is cer? tainly a desideratum. 2nd. Wc need less government, l here were too many commanding, which kept thc firemen confused and made them less confident than they would otherwise have been, 3rd. Wc need another engine. Large and ponderous engines do for a cit} which is paved, but will always provo t failure in uo unpaved town. Light en? gines, and more of thom, will suit om circumstances. With one more cngim OD tho light order, wc would be amplj provided for any ordinary emergency 4th. Would it uot bc better not t< offor whiskey on such occasions? Wi admired Capt Green's abundant suppl; of coffee It is a questionable rewan for industry, skill and enterprise, ot such au occasion, to offer alcoholio slim ulaots, and a great humilation for brave fireman to go home intoxicated Wc felt proud ol' some of our nob! temperance boys, who so manfully re sisted the temptation. Tho stomach, the skin, tho nerves, the luugs, and the excretory organs are especially liable to be affected by these variations, and the best do. fenoe against their disastrous tendeoey is to keep the digestive uucbinery, which feeds and nour, isbes tue whole system, in good working order. If the stomach is weak or disordered neither the blood nor the bile can be in a healthy state, and upon the fitness of these two important fluids for the offices assigned to them by nature, and the regularity of their flow, hoalth in a great measure depends. When tho ulr ls heavily laden with chilling vapors, as it often is at this seoson of the year, the digestion should be an object of peculiar care. If it is week ?ltd languid, the whole physieal structure will bo enervated. If it is vigorous, the entire organisation will be strong to resist tho nn'oward nod depressing influence ol a damp and vitiated atmosphere. A pure and powerful tonio ie therefore esp? cially needed as a safeguard against the diseases most common in the spring, and Hosteller's Stomach Bitters being the must wholesome and potent medicine of the class at present known, a ciiurso of it is particularly advisable at this pe riod of the yenr. The stomach will thoreby be toned and strengthened, the liver and bowels regulated, the nervous system braced up, and nnture put in a stnteof active defenoe against the miasma willoh superinduces intermittent and remittent fevers, rheumatism, nervous debility, boadacho, hypochondria and other complaints which are apt to assail tho untoned and uuforii Bed organizations.
