? It moy bo ono of our fancies, but we
^^atnnot help feeling that the power of
^poetry over tho mind of the old Greek
; was beautifully and truthfully shown by
rj the fact, that in his Theology, the Goa
Who guided the sun in his course was the
5 Same who presided in the realm ol music.
''The glorious son of Te us, who sent the
.. Orb of light and warmth to cheer tho
-mateiial world with his lifo giving
beams, also kindled the perpetual fires
Of genius ou the altar of the poet's heart)
end, with mugio touoh called forth the
enchanting, harmonies of tho musician's
soul.
Tho most brilliant philosopher of thit>
; eontufy has paid so beautiful a tribute
to this wonder working power, that we
feel inclined to love him, as we rend his
glowing words:-"It excels in trans?
porting to tho feet of eternal mercy tho
soul trembling on tho wings of repen?
tance, hope and love. Happy are those
who at K?mo, tn the Vatican, during
the solemnities, of the Catholic worship,
have heard the melodi?s of Leo Durante
end Pcrgolesi, on tho old consecrated
. text. They have entered heaven for a
moment, and their souls huvo been able
. to ascend thither without distinction of |
-rank, country, even belief, by those in?
visible and mysterious steps, composed,
thus to speak, of all the simple, natural,
universal sentiments, thut everywhere
on earth draw from the bosom of the
haman creature a sigh towards another
World."
But if such be the power of music
over the mortal bciug, whose ear is
deadened, aud whose heart is hardened
by the awful reign of sin, whut must be
tho untold aud inconceivable harmonies
of that pure world, where no jarring
discords are allowed to enter, and no
Untuned instrument is suffered to mar
the melody of the angelic choir I
It is not a subjeet fur reasoning, but
ve feel that we could have given an
answer to thc mathematician who after
reading "Paradise Lost," asked con?
temptuously " What docs it prove ?"
It proves tho power of poetry aud the
sway of nong j thc hat mon,, ? heaven,
and tho horrors of hell; the grandeur
of genius and the glory oe God.
Yet far bcyoud this wondrous power
is that of the unheard melodics, of
Whioh the truly tender and sensitive
soul will sometimes catch unwritten
snatches, lt is sod, yet swoct to re?
member that the great composer Beetho?
ven, who enchanted the world with bis
glorious productions, was himself stono
deaf, and when, in reading over his own
grand pieocs his soul seemed ravished
with delight, the untaught people who
witnessed the touching scene wondered
that ho could appreciate thc music.
They kuew not tho great truth that tho
fond mother, Genius, knows her offspring
intuitively, and delights in tho children
ef her own- rearing, iu whatever manucr
they may bo prcseuted to her.
She fondles tho in her bosom, presses
thom passionately to lier own throbbing,
swelling heart, with such delight aa only
thc mother can know. It ono door of
her house is closed by thc ruthless hand
ef Misfortune, she hastens to throw
opcu another through which her loved
ones may gladly conic in und exult in
the gushing tenderness nf a fond moth?
er's heart. The eur of Beethoven was
closed forever, but bid eyo was slill open
and through this window of tho soul did
his music float, and stir his heart to
injuost depths.
Docs any one say, "Ibis is tho very
coinage of your brain ?"-thc d ronni of
au untutored fancy? Wo. might reply
iu thc language ol a child of genius, t hat
wo ure writing "lo those who feel
.rather tlmn to those who think-to
the dreamers, and those who put
faith iu dreams a.s in thu o:?l\ reali?

. Yet if wc need witnesses to the glo?

Tho immense deposits of Phosphuiio Ouanos which were discovered in 1867 in South Carolina,

which any Fertilizer contains, tho le*s tho quantity required per aero, and consequently the cheapest

CHARLESTON, S. C., January lit, 1810.
Respecting the morita of the Ammoniated Solable Super-Phosphate of Lime which I used lut
nenson upon my Cotton landa, I would elute thnt it lins exceeded my expectations, its oppllcstloi
having been attended with the most favorable resalta^ I used it in connection vith the p?pela
Phosphates of the day nnd Peruvian Guano, ?nd unhesitatingly give the preference lu Messrs. Va.
Crichton A Hon's Atntnonioted Super Phosphate, which I regard us the best fertiliser for Cotton Oil
bas been ofiored to the public.

.In reply to your enquiry regarding Wm. Crichton A Son's Auituoniaied Fertilizer >ent to ta.UM
spring, I cnn give my own nnd Mr. J. M. Fowler's experiments. I trie I it on Cotton, side by ?iii
with Peruvian Guano-costing tl 12 per tan-and in the some quantity, and the diff?rence wm en
aiderable. being in favor of the Fertilizer. The Cotton grow fmdl two to throe inches taller, lit
wita bolled in proportion.
Mr. Fowler, one of ?ur best farmers, and closest and moat accurate observen., told me h. trlei
Peruvian Guano, Soluble Pucific. Wando Fertiliser, and six or seven others, tho cheapest of ebltb
cost $65 per ton, und Crichton's Fertilizer beat them all.

Jonson's, Barnwell Co., S. C., Dec. 28tb, 1889.
I used Wm. Crichton A Son's Ammoniated Phosphate on both Corn and Cotton, at the rsl?of
200 putinds to the acre. The results were very good, although we had a very dry season. Isa
satisfied it is a valuable manure, as it was applied on poor land, which is tbe place to test anvtbiif
of this kind. I recommend it to planters as a good fertiliser.

"Thia year I have experimented with ten diffbrcnt fertiliseT nf tho must popular brands-sei
"Wir. Crichton A Son's Ammonioted Soluble Super-Phosphate ol Lime" ?sat present onlr equslltd
by two of the manures. I nm not quite thr ugh picking, but ibero is so little yet lo be picked, (bit
it will not materially alter ti e above statetnei t or result.
I can without hesitation recommend this fertiliser to planters as a No. 1 Cotton Manure.

"I used tho AtnmoT ia'od Super-Phosphnto nf Limo of Wm. Crichton A Son on thn-e acres of Cot?
ton. The summer was remarkably dry; yet I am well pleased with the result. The yield of Collo?
being much greater where the fertiliser was used, and paying me handsomely. I can cheerfully r?
commend it as a first class fertiliser. The weil known integrity of the manufacturen- is asufficint
guurantee for its uniformity."

"I write to say, that so far as I have heard from tho "AMMONIATED SOLUBLE SOPBR
PHOSPHATE," the reports aro very favorable indeed. Several planters who have used Hist sid
the Peruvian Guano sido by side, say they cannot distinguish any difference* I have used both, IN
think your fertiliser shnws fully ns well ns the Peruvian, and believo them wilt be * great deiat&d
