great importance of "firming" the soil over
seeds after sowing, especially when the soil
is dry or likely to become So. I kIow of
no operation of more importance in either
the farm or the gm-den, and I trust, that
what. I am nbout to say will be read and re
membered by every one not yet aware of
the vast importance of the practice. 1 say
"(vast, imp(itanlce,'" for the loss to the agri
nltitual and horticultural Community, from
the habit of loosly Sowing seetds or planting
plhits in hot and dry soils, is of a Imagni
tlde, which few will believe, un1til they
have witnessed it; and it is ia loss all tle
more to he regretted, when we know that
"firming" the soil around the seed or plat.t
is, in m)lost cases, a certain preventive.
Parlicutirly in the sowing of seeds, I

sections of the cotuntry, there was little or

the vicinity of New York City, where we

We sow annually about four acres of
