A Honicide.
Last Thursday night about ten o'clock
Jere Hughes the town miniahal at EIsley
was shot to death by Tom Brock, colorct.
The facts leading up to the killing are
about as follows: There was a negro frol
ic in town at which was a certain negro
woman whose name we failed to get, who
seemed to be quite a favorite with An
d dy Carson. Tom Brock was there and
wanted her to at least divide her attention
with nlltz, but Cnron seemed to have
the Inside track. This caused Brock to be
come angry and soine wordt passed be.

would get even with Carson and inl coi
pany with Tom Cary started to get a gun
with which to (10 l) Carson. In the nCan
time Carson had took the hint and to pie
I vent any further trouble had gone for the

to the house atid sat down in the idoor with
his back to the outiside, While in this
po.ition Brock and Cary appeared, aid sec
ing Hughes in the door with his back to
them, and thinkhig that it was Carson
Brock ralsed his grun and fired. The whole
- load went into ifugies' back which*caused
death in a few minutes. Cary was arrest
ed om the spot, and he with some of the
witnesses were lodged in jail last Friday.
- Brock made his escape and at laut aecouints
had not been found.

Asheville's HIllroad Meetlaag.
Pursuant to an invitatioi issued by citi
zens of Ashevile and Bunconbc county,
N. C., scventy-two delegates met in the
Asheville court house on the 22d Inst., to
consider ways and means for better rail
road facilities from the Atlantic coast to
the northwest by way of Asheville. The
meeting was enthusiastic and baruonious.
The delegates were representative Ien
from Charleston, Greenville, Asheville,
Brevard, lendersonville, Bristol, Tenn.,
Polk, Yancey, McDowell, Madison and
Macon counties, N. U. Col. T. 11. Lon ,
was made temporary chairman, and wef
cuine the visiting delegates. Gov. W. L. t
Mauldin, of Oreenville, was elected perma- V
nent chairman, and madet a happy response I
on behalf of the visitors. There vere 8
