ThefRaven.
The followihg- poem was composed b,
Mrs. Ladd, of Fairfield, the mother o
Mrs. Dr. J. D. Cureton since the death o
the latter's little son, Abner. Mrs. Ladd I
about 88 years of age and totally blind:
The Raven he sat on the window sill,
The sun shone bright, and the air was still
Ile saw the smile, and he heard the sigh,
As the busy, bustling crowd swept by.
The Raven said, What did he say?
Time Bon will sweep them all away,
As the world rolls on forever.
The Raven he flew.
The Raven he flew to the rich man's gate
The Lord of all lay there in state,
What use were his untold bags of gold.
Time could neither be b*ught nor sold.
rhe Raven he said, What did he say?
rime takes men, not wealth away,
As the world rolls on forever.
The Raven flew.
rhe Raven flew to the maiden's bower,
[n beauty she sat, the bride of an hour,
A deep si..h arose from the heart unseen,
as she softly whispered, "It might havc
been."
rhe Raven whispered, bought an-1 sold.
But time will sever the chain of gold,
as the world rolls on forever.
The Raven saw
Some struggling on for the world's renown,
Some for wealth, some for a crown,
The path of life was no child's play,
Thousands were crushed on its thorny way.
rhe Ravec said, What did he say?
Your longest life is but a day,
3till the world rolls on forever.
The Raven said, muan,
Why poison all the joys of life,
With discontent, envy and strife?
rhe cry is wealth my path to line,
3ut who can say, tomorrow's mine.
lursten nae uC a U u A&&, . .
Phe Raven croaked, man be wise,
Pime sweeps all beneath the skieq,
Is the world rolls on fqrever.
The Raven saw
Wany among the mighty crowd
Who never bad to Mammon bow'd,
rhe aged, feeble, sick and poor,
Blces them as they leave their door.
Phe Raven said, blessing save,
rime takes them with you beyond the
grave,
As the world rolls on forever.
The Raven saw.
LIe saw that never fading flower,
A gift to all, an earthly dower,
A mother's love God gave it birth,
With the creation of the earth.
It blooms as bright in dungeon walls,
As in the palace stately halls,
'Mid wealth or want, glory or shame,
A, mother's love remains the same,
l'hat holy love, man guard it well,
Lts strength and power no tongue can tell
rhe Raven said, God gave it birth,
'ime cannot take it from the earth,
Let the world roll en forever.
