TALMAGE SERMON.
iHE BROOKLYN DIVINE PREACHES
ON THE GLORIES OF RELIGION.
The Queen of Sheba Was Amazed at tho
Magnifcence of Soloinou, but, Not So
Much as the Newly Converted Christgian
Is Sure to Be surprisett.
BROOKLYN, Feb. 28.-The congre
gation of the Tabernacle this morning
listened to a glowing description ot the
magnificence of Solomon, which Dr.
Talmage likened to the glories of the
Christian religion, which would, he said,
be a surprise to all who tried it forthem
selves. Ilig text was I Kings, x, 7,
"Behold, the bait was not tol(l me.",
Solomon had resolved that lerusalen
should be the center of all sacred, regal
and commercial miagnificence. lie set
himself to work and moolopobzed the
surrounding desert as a lihiway for his
caravans. ie built the city of1 Palmyira
around one of the principal wells of the
east, so thal, all the long trains of mer.
chandise from the east were oliged ti
stop there, pay toll and leave part oI
their wealth in the htands ofh Soloian's
merchants. lie manned the ortress
Thapsacus at the chiet ford of the Ei
phrates, and put utider guard every thing
that passed there.
Thle three great products of Palst.sLitin
-wine pressed fron the richest lusters
and celebrated till the world over; oil
which in that, country is the entire sub
stitute for butter and lard, a, was
pressed from the olive branches until
every tree in the cotintry becalue an oil
well, and honey which was the entire
substitute for sugar-these three great
products of the country Solomon ex'pori -
ed and receive<n in return fituits and pre
clous woods and the antimals of every
clime.
Ie went down to Ezion-geber and or
dered a fleet of slips to be constructed,
oversaw the workmen, and watched the
launching of' the flotilla which was to go
out on more than a year's voyage to
I.ang home the wealth of the then known
world. le heard that the Egyptian
horses were large and swift, and lon-,
maned and round limbed, and] lie re
solved to purchase them, giving eighty
five dollars apiece for them, putting the
best of these horses in his own stall and
selling the surplus to loreign potentates
at great profit.
lie heard that there was the best ol
timber on Mont Lebanon, andi(I lie sent
out one hundred and eighty thousatid
mni to hew dOwn the forest, and drag
the timber through the mountain uorges
to construct it into rafts to be floate'd to
Toppa, and from thence to be drawn by
ox tennis twenty-five miles aicross the,(
land to .Jerusalem. IIe heard that there
were beautiful flowers in other lands.
Ile sent for them, planted thei in his
own gardens, and to this very day there
are flowers found in thu ruims of' tli
city such as are to be loutid inl Iio other
part of Palestine, the lucal descendatsk
of the very flowers that Solomon plait
ed1. Ie heard that in foreiign groves
there were birds of richest voice anil
most luxuriant wimg. lie sent out peo.
ple to catch them and brin theim there,
and lie put them into hIs Cages.
Stand back now and see this lot).,

Icere we find ourselves amid a collec
tion of buildings on which thec king lauul
lavished the wealth of' many em1pir'es.
The genius of' hiram, the architect, atad

Why, my ir'lends, in that laehi' they
trimmedi their candles wvith snullers oh

Of' course the tiews of' the nilluenee oh
that place went out every where by ever y
caravan andl by wing of every ship, uin
til soon the streets of' Jerusalem tare
crowded with curiosity seeker's. Whitt
is that long procession approaching Je
rusatem? [ think fromu the 1101m1 of it
there must be i'oyalty in the train. I
smell the breath of' thie spices which tare
brought as plresents, and1 I hear the
sh Jut of the drnivers, andt I see the hutst
cevered caravan showing that they come
I':oem far away. Cry the news upl to the
'Jalace. The Qneetn of' Sheba ad(vancies.
Let all the people come out to see. Let
the mighty meni of'the land 'omeo out on
the palace corridors. Let Solomon conie
dlown the stairs of the palace before the
queen has alighted. Shako out the emn
namon and the saflron and the calamus
and the frankineense and pass it Into the
treasure house. Take up thi( diamionids
until they glitter in the suni.
The Queen of Sheba alights. Site en
ters the palace. She washes at the bath.
bhe site dlown at the banquet. The cup
bearers bow. The meat amokes. Y ou
hear the dash of waters from the molten
sea. Then she rises from thie banquet,
and walks through the conservatories,
and gazes en the architecture, and she
asks solomon many strange questions,
and she learns about the religion~ of tlie
Hebrews, and she then andl there be
comes a servant of the Lord God.
She Is overwhelmed. She beL ins to
think that all the apices she brought,
and all the precious woods which are in.
tuaded to be turned into harps and psail
teries and into railIngs for the causeway
between tJie temple and th'e palace, andl
the one hundred and eighty thousand
dollars In money-she begins to think
that all these presents amount to noth
ing In such a place and she Is almost
usbauned that she has brought them, and
he slays withiu herself: "I heard a
