DISCOURSE DELIVERED IN OSKA- !
LOOSA, IA., SUNDAY, FEB. 21.
Hoavenly Congratulations ils Theme.
The Nearness of the Celestial and the1
Terrestrial-.Joy in Heaven Over the t
Repenting of One Sinful Soul.
OSKALOOSA, Feb. 21.-Rev. Dr.
Talmage preached here today to an
enormous audience. lie expects to be
absent from home about ten days, dur
ing which period he speaks in as many
cities. The subject of his sermon was
"Heavenly Congratulations.)' Ilis evi
dent intention was to make worlds that
seem a great way off f1om each other ap
pear very near. lik text was taken
from Luke xv, 7, "Likewise joy shall
be in heaven over one sinner that re
penteth, more than over ninety and nine
just persons who need no repent, ance."
A lost sheep! Nothing can be more
thoroughly lost. 1 look through tile
window of a shepherd's house at night.
The candles are lighted. The slieplherd
has just placed his stall' againsin, t
maul t1. le has taken o' his coa,,
sheken out of it. tile dust and hung it up.
I see by the candlelight that there are
neighbors who have come in. Th11e Slep
herd, tagged out with the long tranip,
sits down on a bench, and the wife antd
childre' and the neighbors say to him,
"Come, now, tell us hlow you found the
poor thing?"' "Well," he says, "this
morning I went out to the yard to look
at the flock. No sooner had I looked
over the fence tian I saw sonethug
wrong. The tIet was they (lid not count

had a hundred. And I Wondered which
one was gol:c, and 1 began again, an( 1
ccunted nincty-five, ninety-six, ninety
seven, ninety-eight, ninety-nine. Well,
I whistled up the dogs, and I started on
the fields and across the bridges, and I
tracked the moors, and I leaped the
gullies, but no bleating of- the poor thing
did I hear. I said to myself, 'Tile
Jamb must have fallen into a ditch, or a
pack of wolves from the mountain mlust
have torn it to pieces and sucked its life
Out.' But I could not give it up. You
see it was a pet lamb. It was that one
with tile black spot on the rigit shoulder
that use( to come and lick may Ian(id as
I crossed the icid, and somehow 1 could
not give it up. So L went on and on
In( on until after awhile I ieard the
dogs bark, and I said, 'What,s that?'
Then 1 hastened to the top of the lill,
and I looked (Iown and there I saw tile
poor lamb. It had fallen into the ditch,
and as I came where it was aid bent
over tile ditch and stooped down to lilt
the poor thing out, I wisll you could
have seen the lovimlg and iniploring andi
tender way it looked at. ine. I lifted it
out, and it was al! covere(d with tihe
slush and the mud. It was an awil
thing to do, but I lited it out, alid it
wias so lame and so weak it could no'.
walk alone, so I threw it over ily sihouil
ders and I started homeward, and tile
cOudition of that lanb ) on may judge of
trom the coat which I have just hung
up. But I traniped oil andl( oil intil it,
is sale in the yad, poor thing! Tliank
God, thank God! ' Then tile slepherd's
wile upread the table and brought. out
the best Ilae tiat, tIe cibinl could afford,
andl they sat, up very late that nigh.,
and thecy talked, and( they ilughed(, and
they sang, and they ate, and( they dirauk,
and they danced, and told over anId over]

Some day the Holy Spirit conmes into
hisa heart and lhe sees that lie cannot do- <

lie says: "0 Lord God, I have been (de

mediately one of the tnwers of hleavenI
strIkes a silvery chima, for there are
four towers to. the hteavenly temple.
Here is a man who Is bad; lie knows lie
Is bad, and everybody else knows lie is
bad, but he Is not an outcast-far from
being an outcast. HIe moves in resp)ec

two of the towers of heaven strike a sil

But here is an outcast, Hie was
picked up last night out of the gutter

as been in the penitentiary three times. (
Ic is covered and soaked with loath- I

itrdon the penitent thiel, hear me cry

ardons, and no sooner Is the poor (
retch pardoned than three of the great
owers of' heaven strike up a silvery
hime. But here is a wait of the street.
ohe passes under the gasli-rht, and your
oul shudders with a great horror. No

As she passes down the atrect she
icars a song in a midnight mission, and
LB she Fsten to that song she hears:
All may come, whoever will,
This Main receives poor siiners still.
She puts into that harbor; she kneels

Now, all the tour Lowers of heiaveln

My subject impresse.s you, I think,
with the t6ouit that it is possble tor
1us to alul!gmlent the happiness of heaven.
People think that souls befire the throne
are as happy as they can he. I (Icily it.
Look at that mother before the throne
of God. When she died she left, her son
in this world it va.abond. Thatson re
pented of his iniquities and clic to
God. The report of that sallvation has
reached heaven. Do yuji tell ie that,
mother before the throne of God has not
her joy richly augmentedl? There is
many a man in this house today who
could go out with a torch and kindle a
new bonfire of victory on tho hills of
heaven. I you would this day repent
and cOmle to God, the news o your sal
vation would reach heaven, and then,
hark! to the shout of' the rinsomed.
