AN APALLING DISASTER. ONE HUNDRED MEN BURNED TO DEATH IN A COAL MINE. fr The Explosion IllockeId the Shaft and V ThoHe Who Escaped Hald to Climb Out of ti the Mine Unalded-i artrond ig Scene% g at the Minet]. 1 KANSAS CITY, Jan. 8.-A Journal special from McAllister, Indian Terri tory, says: A report has reached here d from shaft No. 5, of the Osage Coal and Mining Company at Krebs, that a terri ble explosion occurred there at 5 o'clock last evening from the effects of which two hundred lives will probably be lost. It was just before the day shift changed I off and came out of the mine for sup- a per when a puff of smoke was seen to escape from the mouth of the single shaft to the mine, and immedialely fol lowing this there was heard a terrible r report followed by a rumbling as it of t rolling thunder. Men at the top of the shaft at once sounded the alarm and made prepa rations to send downi a rescuing party, but found that the mouth of the shaft t had been completely closed up by I debris. When the messenger left noth- t ing had been done toward getting the ( men out except to organize a relief party I 'which was to begin at once on the de-t. bris. The Times special from McAlli s ter, indian Territory, says: Twenty tour hours have elapsed since the ter rible fatal explosion in the Osage mine at Kreb's, but it is still impossible to even estimate the number of vi.-timis. The number who came up alive at'(tr . the explosion is still iunkimown anld enni be determined only by a hiouse to house I canvass, which is now being iiide ;is I rapidly as possible. Menmorial Touching the Depressom of Agriouliural luduntries. WAHINIToN, Jai. 15.-The Stato 'residents (of the Farmers Alliance at V rieir lat e meeting here prepared a mem- 8 rial culling attention to the universal f epression ini all departments of agri- a ultural Intiuastry that have oppressed a hie farmers of the United States with Ii ravest concern and alarm. Despite t he fruitfulness of the soil, favorable 1 limate, futhful application and indus- 1 ry, irrespective of seasons and hary- 1 sts, the price of farms and farm pro- t acts are constantly depreciating in t 'alue. 1 The memorial continues that patient mid earnest investigation of this ano- s nalous condition of alTairs has im- 1 >ressed the farmers of the country that c ,he evils thus clogging and paralyzing i heir energies are largely due to the I liscriminating inequalities in the gov- C rnmental policy whsch is the legitt- r nate outgrowth of partial and unfriernd- t y legislation. In their organized cap- t icity, comprising thirty-eight States 8 and ten territories, the alliance had ad- ' )pted a declaration of its principles, a c opy of which is submitted, and which t hey believe, if enacted into laws, will a estore the agricultural industry to its i rue and just position among the great N ndustries of tle country and conserve I o the best interests of the public good. i They call attention to the necessity g of immediate legislative action for the s inancial relief to busine*s interests of I lie comntry. They assert that the pres- o nt iinancial system is inherently defec- r ive and incompatible with the genius t md spirit of American institutions and n conlilict witli the fundamental princi- c )les of governinent.
