Carpenter passed through town last .Saturday, enrouto for Liberty. -Miss Lida Hagood left for Charleston last Tuesday, where she will attend school this winter. -901. J. 19. Hagood purchased 10,877 acres of the vacant lands sold by the State last Monday. -Good new middling cotton Is now bringing 6 cents. There Is no market for last year's crop. -Tuesday was a cool day for the Alli ance picnic at Liberty. Details will be given next week. -Rev. Chas. Manley, D. D., of Green Ville, will preach in the Presbyterian church here, Thursday evening, at 7:30.' -Mr. Jas. T. Singleton, of Pickens, has Durchased the Thode place of Mr. Wi. J. Btribling, and expects to move this fall. once ewos. -At the examination of teachers last Priday, there were nine applicants. One Grst grade, two second and four third grade certifieates were issued. --There was a fair crowd in 'attendance Upon sale day, but many farmers stayed at home to gather the white staple with which h,elds are now covered. -Clerk Hagood, of the U. S. court, left ter Spartanburg Tuesday, where the court will convene to hear argument In the fa. mous Coosaw injunction case. -Prof. Justus has interested several of our young men in the subject of a brass band for this place. There is plenty of material here to make a good one. -Messrs. B. F. Perry and L. W. Park er, of Greenville, attended the land sales here last Monday. Mr. Perry invested in a tract of 800 acres of the State lands. -From 1: 15 to 7 p. m. last Sunday, 1tO buggies, carriages and wagons, and 83 horsemen passed through town returning from the campmeeting at Twelve Mile. -The demand for cotton pickers has rnade a scarcity of labor in these parts. Cotton is being gathered taster and in bet ter shape than ever before in this county. -On last Sunday the 4th inst., at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. Tiinan Smith, Mr. E. Kennemore was married to Miss Malinda C. Smith, Rev. S. A. Gary officiating. -On last Sunday the 4th instant, at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. J. Mat 'i Stewart, near Field, Miss A. C. Stew art was married to Mr. Win. D. Gravley, 11ev. 0. L. Durant officiating. -Prof. Justus' school is still improving, :and if the present rate of increase in the number of pupils is kept up, lie will be compelled to employ an assistant. 'When these lota are improved it wvill help the town considerably. --Rev. 0. L. Durant moved back to his tewn residence last Mouday. Mr. Younag blood, who has occupied t-he property this summer, has moved into the new house built by Dr. Earle on his "Kelly hill" plaice just out of town, -on the Glasey mountaini road. -The County Com'ndsioners will hold a special meeting next Monday to consider the petition for a railaoad election to be held eouring next month for the purpose of Voting the subscription to the Pickens and Easley railroad. In a month this p)rojet weill take definite shape. -Prof. Dargan's family left for Spartan burg last week, carrying with them the best wishes of many sincere friends he.re 1rho reluctantly gave themi up. This esti meable family are a great acquisition to any commun)ity, and Spartanburg is fortunate In securing them as citizens. -Robert shipmau, a white man em p loyed at the cotton ginl of Mr. John C. Bgga, of LI berty township, had the mis furtune to get his hand caught, in thme gin and lost two tingers, besides getting his arm considerably lacerated. Good order prevailed. Carey Esq., represented the defendant. The en tire forenoon was taken up by this case, and after hearing the evidence and argu. ment of counsel, the jury retired and in an hour made a verdict of "Not Guilty." The trial of J. I. Holliday for murder lasted about a day and a half. The Solici tor was ably assisted in the prosecution by H. 0. Bowen, Esq. The :lefendant had an able advocate in Mr. J. P% Carey, who ex hausted every point that could be made in his favor. Ils Honor, Judge Kershaw, made a fair and Impartial charge of 15 minutes duration. At 6 p. m. on Wednes (lay the jury retired to make up their ver dict. It took them just three hours and twenty minutes to agree. At 9:30 Judge Kershaw took his Reat on the bench with Il the ofilcers present. A large and impa tient crowd gathered li the court room to hear the verdict. The prisoner took his seat in the dock, and the twelve men who bad passed upon his fate, filed in and the foreman handed the docunient to the Clerk who read the finding, which was "man slaughter with a recommendation to mer cy." The verdict created some surprise, but no demonstration was made. On Thurday Holliday was sentenced to three yeais in the penitentiary and to pay a flue of i200. Berry Williams, Wim. WUlliams ned IIar vey Kelley, all colored, guilty of stealing, one year each In the penitentiary. Win. Sitton, colored, not guilty. Wi. Willis, carrying concealed weapons guilty, and fined $25 which he paid. Bob Davidson, housebreaking and lar ceny, Fuilty; one year at hard labor. Louis Powell, assault, guilty; seated sen tence. Civil Docket--Owing to the large amount of crininial business ouly two jury cases on the civil side of the court was disposed of. W. T. Griflin et al vs. J. T. Anthony, slander; the jury was out all night and fail ing to agree, a mistrial wias ordered. Archer vs. Mcinritt, verdict for plaintiff. Several orders of reference were passed, and some of the equity eases appointed to be heard at chambers on the circuit. Court adjourned sine die at 1 P. m. on Saturday. Died. Last Friday morning at 3 o'clock, Mr. John M. Hendricks, (Dinctuni John) died very suddenly at his home near Six Mile, from appoplexy. Aged about 70 years. Mr. Hendricks was one of the foremost citizens of the county, and one who has done much to develope the farming inter ests of the Pea Ridge section. le was for many years a consistent niber of the Methodist church,andi a man universally re spected and loved. In his death the coun ty loses one of its best citizens. The burial took place at Fairview graveyard on Satur day, where the last sad rites were perform ed by Bates Lodge A. F. M., in the pres ence of a large concourse of friends of the deceased. Notice.
