The unity of the Democratic party in South Caaolinia is now the great question. The SENTINEL is agini1st everythmg that tries to interfere with this unity, upon the general and broad ground that the party has little strength to spure if it Continues to stand between the people of SouthCarolina and the greed and corruption of the alien and the ignorant. Every .Democrat and every democratic paper owes it to himself and the white people of this State to make all other questions sub-ordinate to this. Compared to this all tie grave qustimins sprung, by the Alliance pale into insignili cance. Compared to democracy in this State, the democracy of the northwest and the north are mere bide issIes. The only fair and just way for the Alliance in this State to take a hand in polities would be under a special dispensation allowing it to issue certiliates of limtited membership to lnwycrs and merchants to come into the order and discuss and vote on all such <Iues tions. In othier 'States the white peoplecan split on anything. Which ever way it goes it is a white mnn's government, and r ill lin the interest of the white man, and this makes it to the interest of all. Bitt what ever divides theiti white peoplc of Soth('ar olina in politis, is sure to bring disaster. The Alliance in this State is thoroughly dencratic so far. But when any white IIIan places tie suHb-treasury schemlle above his deimocritcy, lie Is on dangerois grmund - his polities have become cmntaiinlated. Ben Tillan in South Carolina is worth a thousand such democrats its Ben Turrell. Parad, oxical as it may -eem. they' are h l democrats, but there is i Wide differeite inl their politics. The former puts his deim cracy first and his allegiance to tIe Alliance next: the lattIr puts his atlegiaie to the Alliance first and his de'&imicracv in-xt. Till man's creed is safe-Ternrl's is~danl geruis. The Alliance men who ought to speak ari not sp.akilng. Suspil-i4n, prejudice :nd passi'n .arc ru Hn illt.
