Kearse, a towilhip i"1 Barnwell coun
ty, wherv the itrtce trouble occurred
some months ago, is to the elreet that
there is more trouble between the i
raes. A man just in from Koarso i
states that over 300 ne,roes, armed 1
with new WiiChester rifles, had ]
Iivthiered. and that seiious troublo
was anticipated. One negro had I
becii killed, and several of both races
wcre injured. At 9 p. m. a white mili
tiay company left this place for. the
sceIe of the tirouble, mid the whites
will be i-olforced by those from tihe
SU1run0d111lin. koun1ltivs. No cause is
assignIed for the trouble beyond the
bad blood between the races, caused
by the riot some time ago.
BLACKvnLL:, S. C., July 16.-The j
prompt and determined action of the
white people of Barnwell county pre
vented ainy fiutier troublo at the
Kearse settlement. Most of the de
tachment of militia who went to
Kearse's at the pleading call from
the people, have returned from the
scene of the rouble: An Associated
Press representative saw the Captain
of the relief squad, and from him ob
tainvd the latest information from the
sCeCe. He said:
"I have not, the slightest doubt but
that there would have been very seri
oil, trouble at Kearse's had not our
squad arrived promptly on the field.
The nows that aid had been sought
and was coming i was diffused and the
negroes. if they at any time had des
ptrrate i tentions. abandoned them,
for the pireseit at least. The fight
and show of determination on the
part of the vhIitei of the county it is
thought by all, had its effect upon
lie negroes and no further trouble
is inticipated. The negroes have all
returned to their work. Eleven ne
groes ambushed several young vhIite
men )uit they all left and cannot be
found. The body of Gantt, the ne
gro' Who vas riddled with bullets,
was viewed by llany of the negroes.
