The DuUWay lne Meetng as Aberel
The meeting was called to order, an
Mr. S. D. Stewart was elected chairmal
and Mr. John T. Boggs was requeste
to not as secretary.
The report of Mr. J. E. Boggs in r
gard to the action of the Pickens moo
ing was received as information.
Mr. J. P. Carey was then heard in r<
gard to the progress of the subscriptio
committee.
The following was adopted:
WnEnEAs, The town of Pickens an
the surrounding country is without rai
road facilities and the demand therofc
is groat, and
Whaas, The survey of tho dumm
line from Liberty to Pickens and the e
timatod cost of the same is satisfactor
to both of the said towns and countr
through which said line runs, and th
friends of the enterprise, be it therefor
Resolved, That it is the sense of thi
meeting that the said dummy lin
should be built from the town of Liber
ty t'o Pickens, and as early as practica
blo.
Resolved, That a committee be ap
pointed to prepare and circulate a pape
on which they shall take the amoun
either in money, material or work oi
the said road from any and all personi
who will not take as much a share in th<
onterprise, but who are willing to givi
something toward the same.
That the committee shall make knowr
the result of its efforts as soon as con
venient, and if the success of said coin
mittee is such as we believe it will be
then that a charter be at once appliet
for and the work on said road be begui
and completed as early as possible.
The committeo appointed was as fol
lows: J. D. Smith, E. 13. Richardson
J. A. Boggs, W. D. Glenn and W. 0
Willard.
Resolved, That when the meeting ad
journ, it be to moet on the 28th inst., al
4 o'clock p. m.
The committee raised $3,000 in a ver3
short time.
The Mall Mule.
This equine apology for a horse wat
the storm center of attraction for on(
minuto last Tuesday morning. Gu
Folger was in the act of unhitching hin
to start to Easley, when something tick.
led him (the mule) and away lie brok(
bounding across Main street, accomipa
nied by the cart and mail, leaving Gu3
brushing the dust from his clothes. Th(
senior editor missed the opportunity ol
his life to;conquor and Itame a wild mule,
which at this juncture becar 3 entangled
in the harness and cart, and cried foi
help, but the editor was not a candidat(
for the hospital, so lie resisted the temp.
tation to suddenly becomo a hero. Th<
frantic mule now began to use two feel
for kicking, and the otlhfr two for run
ning. He was fast making for Easley,
when met by Taylor Stewart who is not
afraid of a mule. He seized him by the
nos1 and suddenly the mule was calrm
and serene, and began to snore. HiE
clothing, cart, mail bag and boy were
soon restored and be hied him away
to Easley under deep conviction and
Guy's whi) lash.
Plcken,' Dummny.
The Pickens people appear to be in
earnest in their movement for a dummy
line from Liberty to Pickens Court
House, a distance, wo believe, of a littk
les. than seven miles. Probably it
would be to the interest of the Rich.
mond & Danvil!e to look into the matter,
as the proponed duimmy will probably b(
a valuable little feeder. It runs to-sard
one of the richest timber belts now r
maiiining in this country and would le
much to open up and develop a fertik
and promising region.
The p)eople, however, aIre not depend
ing on outside help. They arc pushuing
vigorously and giving generously thiem
selves and expect to succeed chiefly by
their own efforts.
Pickens Court House is at the foot ol
the~ mountains, and a dumamy line to it
would probably largely develop aL sum
mner resort business which has already
reachied very large proportions desp1it<
innuiimerable hindrances. - Greenvillk

e Once was heard a minstrel singing,
1 All the air around was ringing,
I With the sweetness of his song.
3 Sang. he loud of fame and glory,
3 Sang of battles fierce and gory;
3 But none listened of the throng
That went crowding by.
1I
. Then a tale of love he chanted,
. Of a casile, old and haunted,
Of a maiden wondrous fair.
Rescued from dire peril there
By a knight of noble bearing;
But the people little caring
Passed, nor raised an eye.
III
Then once more, with words so thrilling
Sang he, all the tumult stilling,
IlurryiNg footsteps lingered near,
All were eager now to hear,
For his tlieme reached poor and wealthy,
Charmed alike the sick aud healthy
Gave an impulse vew.
IV
For lie sang, "Oh, hear yc, Mothers,
"Fathers, Sisters-At Sloan Brothers,
"You can bargains* find
"Suited to each mind.
"Drugs to help the worst diseases,
''Medicines that cures and pleases."
(And his words were true.)
V
"-Seeds that sprout as soan as planted,
''Also paints and .,ils when wanted,
"Glass to make your houses lighter
"And your fireside seem the brighter-"
Soon the minstrel stood alone,
All to Sloan's for birgains* gone,
And his work was done.
