-The public school term will last
iout two weeeks yet.
-Mrs. J. Lee Carpenter, of Green
viRe, is visiting relatives and friends in
town.
-Nine recruits were added to the pen
'intentiary force by the Greenville crimi
nal court.
-It has gone out of style to make re
marks on a clean hearth when convors
ing with the landlady.
-The family of Mr. E. J. Prince were
down with influenza last week. Five
children were sick at one time.
-The Pickens delegation turned out
in full force to attend tho dummy line
;meeting at Liberty last Saturday.
-Rev. A. P. Nicholson is still at W.
A. Mauldin's at Ensley, and his friends
have abandoned all hope of his recovery.
-There has been a dearth of cooks in
this place for the past two weeks. The
Dinahs have been down with the infln
,enza.
-The freeze last Saturday and Sun
day finished up the fruit crop. Some
early gardeners lost their early veget:;
bles.
-The delegates to the Farmers Con
vention in Columbia on the 27th instant,
will get tickets at reduced rates over all
the railroads.
-Mrs. Mary E. Alexander, and Mas
ters Claude and Eugene, went down to
Charloston last Wednesday. They will
remain until next summer.
-Read the advertisement, of the Coun
ty Commissioners for 14ealed bids this
wook, on enlarging the court house, and
the sale of vacant lots in Pickens.
-The Pickens township sub-Alliance
was in session soveral hours last Satur
day diacussing the prospect and devising
ways and means for supplies for the sea
son.
-The election for Intendenf and four
Wardens will be held on the first Mon
day in April, for Pickeus, Central and
Liberty, and for Easley on the third
Monday.
-Mr. Bailey Higgins, the congenial
and eflicient operator at Spartanhnurg,
had to take a little recess from work last
week, from an accident4l burn received
from a hot stove.
-The wrecked building on the Griflin
corner is being reconsti uted alongside
of Messrs. Newberry & Thornley's store.
A now and larger building is to be placed
on the Griflin corner.
-Julian W. Bruce came up from An
(bison last Sunday to see his mother,
Mrs. S. P. Bruce, who tins been quite
sick for the past two weekr. She is
some better at present.
-Mr. J. E. )uke, the well-known
and popular caterer of the Central hotel
has resigned. The numerous patrons of
this famous eating house will be sorry to
learn of his resignation.
-Dr. J. B. Carpenter goes to Central
today where he will remain about ten
days. All persons neeting the services
of a first-class dentist will do well to call
on him. All work guarntteed.
-Gabriel Ferguson, colored, who wvas
neanrly 0ono hundrettd years of agoe, died
near Glassy Mountain last SabbathI. 11lis
remins were interred in the burying
ground for colored peop)lo near where
he died.
--The citizens of Pendleton are agitat
ing the subject of a a dlummny line fr<.mn
that place to Fort Hill, and the building
of a first-chass hotel at the former place.
Enterprise is the order of the day at
present.

The Dummy Line Meeting at Liberty.
The meeting was called to order, and
Mr. 8. P. Stewart 1 was elected chairman,
and Mr. John T. Bogge was requested
to not tw seoretary.
The report of Mr. J. E. J3oggs in re
gard to the action of the Piokons meet
ing was received as information.
Mr. J. P. Carey was then hoard in re
gard to the progress of tho subscription
committee.
'Te following was adopted:
WIInuAs, The town of Pickens and
tho surrounding country is without rail
road facilities and the demand therefor
is great, and
Whereas, The survey of the dummy
lino from Liberty to Pickous and the es
timated cost of the same is satisfactory
to both of the said towns and oountry
turough which said line runs, and the
friends of the enterpriso, be it thereforo
Resolved, That it is the snso of thie
meeting that the said dummy line
should ho built from ta town of Liber
ty to Pickens, and as early as practica
blo.
Resolved, l'hat a committee be ap
pointed to prepare and circulate a paper
on which they shall take the amount
either in money, muaterial or work on
the said road from any and all persons
who will not take as much a share in the
enterprise, but who are willing to give
something toward the same.
That the committee slhill make known
the result of its efforts as soon as conl
venient, and if the succ ss of said com
mittee is such as we believe it will be,
then that a cmrter be at once a)plied
for and the work on said road be begun
and completed as early as 1)ossible.
The committee appointed was as fol

This equine apology for a horse was

help, but the editor was not. a candidate
for the hospital, so he resisted the teml)
tation to suddenly become a hero. '1The
frantic mu1lo now began to use two feet
for kicking, and the otbr.r two for run
ning. lie was fast making for Easley,
when met by Taylor Stewart who is not
afraid of a inule. lie sciz d him by the
nose and suddenly the mule was calm
and lsercne, land beganti to snore. His
clothing, cart, mail hag and boy were
Soon restored and he hied him away
to Easley under deep coiviction amid
Guy's whip heli.
