"Last night an excursion train on the
Toledo, Peoria and Western railrord went
down with a burning trestle, tbout, three
miles east of Chattsworth, and over 100
excursionists killed and 406V or more ha ! v

son why a tornado should spare a large
city. lie even went so far as to say that 1
it was possiblo that a funnel-shaped l

Brooklyn bridge into a corkscrew. The 1
Chicago Intor-Ocean taikes a different
view--starting out with the assumption
that the immunity enjoyed by large cities
in the past is solid ground for the belief
that there is no danger to bo apprehend- c
ed. I t is, nevertheless, admitted that a
wlirlin' ae:ial shaft having a diameter
of 2,0(00 feet, and moving at the rato of
80) miles an hour would crush the most I
substantial buildigs like so many egg
shlls. '1'w lnter-Ocean says:
'"th' reason is very plain, and may be
easily understood, even by pcoplle un
versvd in scientific lore. The tornado at
the out-ct is a simple, whirling shaft of
air, caused, as we believe, by the wind
currents from nearly opposite directions,
of uncalual temperature and different
degrees of humidity. When it is fairly
started on its course it generates im
ntmnsC qluantities of electric fluid. In
act it becomes a swiftly moving dynamo,
geierating E nough electricity to make
it luminous, and leaving evidence of the
burning Iluid in its pathway. It is the
theory of sonic who have written on the
suabject that the tornado is primarily
cMsed by electric action, but this we
think is an error. The mistake is in
placing the efl'eet for the cause. But it
is certain that after its ineption electri
city is generated, and that the subtle
Iitid becomes one of the most important
facturs of its destructive force.

that deatli or damage by lightning is of
very rare occurrence in the centre of any
eonsilerable city. The bolts may strike
in the suburbs, but if they descend in
the city they are arrested by much more
si i n uess and certainty than a depredator
is caught by 'the best.'

foun that buildings constructed of solid
nasiry and good brick, put together in
a wrkmanlike manner, resisted the

hitdings, therefore, allord some protec
t ion. lie fact that no structure will re
a couiiinn of air whirling along at the
m,de of ht)u miles an hour should not
dlter puepic from building their houses
in a proper manner. A tornado that
will destroy a well-built house is n1o more
aneug the probabilities in this latitude
than is a destructivo _ earthquake.
