Sixty-four cadets were recently
graduated from the United States
Military Academy at West Point. At
this rate it will be a long time before
we run short of material out of which
to make generals.
The supply of whiskey is so much
isa excess of the demand that the Ken
tucky Distillers' Association has de
cilCd not to make any more in that
State until the 1st of October 1888.
Prohibition must be getting in some
good work somewhere.
When once the zeal for the educa
tional interests of a town begins to
flag, the shock will soon be felt in ev
ery department of hnsiuexs. The
booms which schools bring to towns
are often attributcd to sourthing
else, but as soon as the inicrest iii
the school weakens, the secret will
be discovered. It is a great neglect
of one's own business for him1 to ie
come careless about thte educational
interests of the community in which
he lives.
There was a tunble both in the
coffee and wheat markets last week,
and many bulls were wr eked. June
reports show a grnte, snpply of both
coffee and wheat than was anticipated
by the speculators, so the bottom
dropped out and the crash came; but
not before their gambling in futures
had taken many a hard earned dollar
from the toiling uillions by the ad
vance it caused in those goods. This
gambling in futures controls to a
great extent. the pr1ic'e of cotton, corn,
wheat, bacon and all the other com.I
modites. It is an artificial supply
and demand that regulaites thle price,
and-day aftcr day speculators p)ocket
their thousands for literally nothning.
Congress couild stop1 the~ business,
but it may be afraid..to try. It has
been carn ied on so long that it may
now be regarded as a segmient of the
governmnent. All tihe big cities have
their exci7mnges on a grand scale
where the speculutors meet t'o buy
and sell tlhe crops before thicy are
pllanlted. When all the states minke
the business a misdemeanor, then
engress may take tihe subject in
hand.

There are some calling themselves
"evanvelists" and othere who are not
evangelists who seem to think it a
part of their imissioln in the world to
regulate how woinen shall dress. ,
The very "evangelists" who make I
themselves rodiculous by railing(
against women's "fashions" follow
men's fashions. They wear good
clothes, that look like the cl-thes of
the "worldly" man and "sinrnr."
They wear starched linen aid stand
ing collars, and silk cravats, and nic3
hats, and hand sewed shoes, and lneat
and "fasliionable" suits----sometines
silk beavers and gold watch chains
'rhey try to look neat and presentatblo.
Then why should not the women look
neat and pr"esentable alIo---espeeiaPy
when it costs them less than it costs
the inen? If these would-be dress re
formers (for women) iman aytling,
why do th,y follow the ''fa-hiots.'
. suit of jeans is very comfortable in
the winter, and costs much les's than
diagonals and broadcloths. A con
fortable stunnier suit can be had for
five or ten( dollrs. There is a great
deal of service in a ninety cent brogan
aind a dollar wool hat.. and an osnaburg
shirt with a turn downdown collar,
which saves the expence of cravat
aund gold e)llrl button. Before
preachling sackeloth and ashes for the
women, let the "evangelists" try ta lit
tle sackcloth and ashes on tIem;:selvsO.
