The Editor of the Philadelphia "Tines"
Subanits to an Interview and Discusses
Some of the Live Issueb of the Day.
Col. A. K. McClure, the distinguish
d editor of the Philadelphia Times,
recently pAssed through Chauleastone,
and was interviewed by. a rtporter of
the News and Cuurier. II reply to
requests for an expression of his views

CIVIL SERVICE: REFotM.
"In the ilust place, we have more
professioinal poiiticians in the North
than you have here. We have a great
deal of dissatisfaci ion as to the civil
service reform policy of the President
but It is among the politiciaans who are
so by trade and who expect Mr.
Cleveland to do just what he has
promised not to do. But there is no
dout that the overwhelhiing sentiment
of the Deinocrats of the North is in
favor of Mr. Cleveland's policy ; and
tnat senltiment, is growing stronger
day by day for two reasons: First, he
is doing more and more to sati fy the
reasonable wi-hes of the )enocrats in
filling officcs; and second, they ate
gettig to unterstand better anil better
how wise that policy Is. If the Demo
cratic party do not sustain Mr. Cleve
land in his present policy they will
utterly destroy the parlt. ; it will go to
pieces and be broken up-disintegrat
ed."
"There is another thing," continued
Col- McClure, "that is steadily streng
thening Cleveland at the North, ai
tI at is the growing confidence in hii
of business circles, whicm, you know,
are very largely Republican in th
North. He has the confidence of in
dustrial, commercial and financial
men, and those who regard busiiest
as of more importance than politics.
As to the dissatisfaction existing, there
is not one-quarter as -much with Mr.
Cleveland in the Democratic party :a
there was with Mr. Lincoln in the
Republican party during his terin of
office. I have no doubt whatever that
before Mr. Cleveland has filled one
half of his term of office, iile:s some
thing entirely unexpected and not of
his own creation should happen, lie
will be the strongest President this
country has had siLCe the war."
''Are the mass of Indpeein(ient Ite
publicans satisfied with the Adininis
tration of Clevelaid?" asked the Ite
porter.
THE INIEPENDENT 1t:rlt.ItCANs.
"The great mass of the Indepede,nt
Republicans that, supported M1r. Cleve
land, have eutire coufidtuee in hni
and heartily sustain him. They ai4
very independent, of course, aid do
not sustatin any person blindly. Th'Ie
do not approve of everything he hiat
done, but they have an aiing faiti
in his inherent. intcgrity of {.trpose
and it his ability, with al his enibar
rassmcutits, to work out. his policy and
to tnaake ;t a success. They are en
tire,y satisfiel with him as Presideim
antd with his general policy. As 1
have said before, there are a grea
nany lItedttbhicans in commiercial aui
flintucial circles; who vole+i :iniaas
