A VAAxn ItEPOr OOBEEUTED.--.In
our issue of the 12th instant we gave an
account, as we had heard it, of a fearful
tragedy in the upper part of Andorson
oounty, to wit, that Dick Mulligaiin ita
drunken spree became enraged at hid
wife, threw a chair at her and, missing
the objoot of his wrath, atruck his little
daughter, killing her instantly, and that
ho then deliberately cut his own throat
with a razor from ear to ear; that both
ohild and father were buried at Sharon
church on the day following the terrible
act. We hositated for some time about
publiching the account, but receiving
infornation which seentod to confirm the
truth of the report we gave it to our
readers. Now it turns out that the re
port was false from beginning to end.
We have rceoived a mssage from Mr.
Mulligan to the effect that ho and his
family Att6 all alive, in the enjoyment of
good health, and living in pence and
I harmony; that he hasn't been drunk for
a long time, and that when unfortun
ately under the influence of whiskey is
mnoi"c kind and loving to his family than i
when t+ober. 3oty such a report could
have gained such a wide circulation with
out contradiction, we do not know. We
are sorry that it ever found its way into
our colimns, atid hereby tender omti
al,prologies to Mr. Mulligan for the great
injuntice done him.

Our follow town-uan, Mr. Jamne F,
Kirksey, is the owner of a clock tlat is
certieinly a eurriosity in this day and
tine. It is one of "our grand-father's I
clocks," but is a of style, the like of
which we never before saw. It is fasten
od to the wall about as high as a tall man
cawi reach, and the weights run down to '
the floor. The pendulum is about three l
feet in length, and there is no ease around l
it and the weights. The machinery is sa
all wood, and the wheels quite large for -11
a clock, and is wound up simply by Ia
pulling a chord. It was brought to this
country from Virginia by Mr. Kirksey's
great grand-father Keith, when he was c
it young man, ov; a hundred years ago.
I How mtch older the clock is no one it
knows. It has ben kept as an heir
loom in the faily eVer silne. ald ii

All the p)risoners conined in jail at
